The powers that the police seem to have been given.  The loss of our freedom. The fact that what started out as "guidance" has now become law. These jumped up police chiefs holding press conferences telling us to be good little people this weekend or we will be arrested (Actually he said that that would be left to the discretion of individual police, something I'm not comfortable with).

The whole thing worries me more than the virus.

So do you think everyone should be able to do whatever they like with no interference during a deadly pandemic?

But you know they're only doing all that to try and stop the virus spreading and collapsing the nhs? They're not just doing it for a laugh while on some power trip. If these measures continue once things settle down I'll maybe start to complain, but they won't.

I have absolutely no idea.

Fair enough, here's some facts.

95% of all flights are cancelled.

Passenger loads are very low on flights still operating.

Cargo only flights are up 243%.

40% of all the UK's medical supplies come in by air.

The government have given the airlines £75milliin to fly people back to the UK from all over the world.

Nobody is going on holiday or just visiting other countries for a wee jolly.

Look at Heathrow Airport's arrivals board on line. Try the morning from 5.30am through to noon.

Regular scheduled flights. All of them.

I'd be concerned if the government were in alignment with it but the checking of people's shopping etc isn't law and has just been certain police forces opting to do it off their own backs for whatever reason. They've been reigned in pretty sharpish by downing street on that front and quickly led to them issuing u-turns saying 'oh no, it was just a little over exuberance'. Downing street was quite explicit today that shops that are open can sell whatever they stock and people can buy whatever is stocked. Now, driving to a supermarket to by some beers isn't essential (nor is 90% of what people are buying) but the policing of that should be done outside, not scoping out the magazine and book aisles.

They've been dealt a tough hand the police as it's not been super clear what they are meant to be enforcing but the social media posts about enforcing things the government have clearly stated is okay has been more egg on their face rather than anything sinister imo. Try not to worry about it...99% of them just want to help keep everyone safe.

Ordinarily there's a good chance I would have been there at this very time (I'm half Italian myself and have family in Rome and other parts of Italy). There are a lot of people in my situation, with family members in Scotland/the UK and family in Italy. My understanding is that in terms of the lockdown we are supposed to have decided where we are living and not to move from there - this applies as much to within the UK as internationally i.e. someone who lives in Edinburgh with family in London should either be living in Edinburgh or London and not going from one to the other. Again I suppose it all comes down to the meaning of essential. I just find it incredible I can go on the internet and have a choice of three flights from Heathrow to Rome tomorrow.

Well in that case who would be wanting to go to Rome unless they had a really good reason to do so, you'll know as well as I do there are usually plenty of Police in the arrivals hall, normally they don't give you a second look, now however I'd imagine they'd may well be stopping everyone and asking them why they are in Rome, what is their business, where are they going, where are they staying, and if you ain't got a very good reason, then you'll be on the next flight back to the UK, if your lucky.

How many passengers?

We're they being repatriated or traveling essentially?

You need those answers before saying it's an issue.

Apologies if already posted, but I couldn't see it.

A follow up or extension of yesterday's rammy over passport office staff being told to go back to work,  however this time with the context of an insight into the government's strategic thinking, which would appear to be that they don't give a shit about the 'collateral damage'

genuine question - do u not see this as one possible outcome ?

ideally the virus dies out or we get  100% vaccine but don’t you accept this might be something we might have to live with going forward and be managed as best as can be

flu (I know the senior modellers on here refute the comparison) wipes out almost 20000 per year that’s over 100000 in maybe 5-6-7 year period no trouble at all to the friendly old flu virus (and there’s already a vaccine for that)

do folk really think with any confidence this is just going to go away

No idea if this is true but it wouldn't surprise me. It's become a social media contest to see who can get the most offended by people going outside.

That graph is irrelevant to me. It doesn't include a factor which at least currently can't be quantified. What would the graph look like if no measures had been taken? If life had just carried on as normal?

The article does cover it tbf and is quite clear that if we done nothing then excess deaths would be significantly higher. It's not suggesting we should do nothing as most folk would die anyway.

Not what I said. It is the nature of the "interference" that concerns me. This scaremongering us into staying in the house, constant news reports abd adverts telling us to stay home, and now the Commander or whatever of Northants Police flexing the police's muscle today.

All seems a bit dystopian.

Of course, it is fine to have these concerns without wishing death and infection on people.

Fair enough, I didn't know the police had reigned them in. I have a distrust of the police these days, it's a pretty rational fear I would say. Of course 90% of people on here would disagree and that's fair enough.

We were heading towards dystopia long before this kicked off. Right now though the messages telling everyone to stay home are there for the right reasons.

Why? Because we didn't shut down. Quite easy for an island? No?

What you're saying is as an island with the worst death rate in Europe people are booking non essential flights to come here.

I've read that a couple of times now and it still makes absolutely no sense

There was every chance we would have anyway.

For example, the UK has a higher rate of obesity than Italy, Spain, France etc etc, our diet is shit, our alcohol intake does us no favours add in the damp weather in often poor housing, long working hours and poor social opportunities and high levels of stress.

That's a bad mixture to have.
