No. I’ve just checked and the buildings on the left are wrong. I’m sure this photo has cropped up on here before and caused much confusion. My immediate instinct was St Mary’s as well as the slope and bottom seem right but it isn’t.

Bingo. Spot on.

The view down the street has fairly changed since then. Like you, i immediately thought of St. Mary's. Quite similar minus the building details.

In between there was an office building that housed the NCB (National Coal Board). I can't find any pictures of it though.

Leith Walk at McDonald Road junction?

I'm not sure what road it is. Don't recognise the building for the Furnishing shop and the front of the bus is blocking a side street on the other side.

I went to the kids Christmas parties at Green Park and loved them. The presents were always great.

I remember Oblomov being full of 6th year St Margaret's pupils. I was around that age myself, before anyone says anything.

Re Wallace Mercer, sure he did own it and his son ran it.

gorgie asylum on that site first then orwell house i think

Although not necessarily what we would associate an asylum with, it was a Magdalene Asylum. They were refuges for the 'fallen women' of Scotland in the 18th and 19th Century with prostitutes, single mothers and even socialists admitted to be 'trained by the habits of industry and sobriety.'

So a lot of dirties on our doorstep.

Original Scottish ones were Protestant I believe.

Wiki

n 1797, the Edinburgh Royal Magdalene Asylum was founded in the Canongate in Old Town, a popular location for street prostitutes. Some of the women were drawn to the city by industrialisation, some were pregnant and some had been forced into prostitution. Mary Paterson, (also known as Mary Mitchell) was murdered by William Burke shortly after leaving the institution on April 8 1828. The Edinburgh asylum moved to Dalry around 1842. The programme was supported in part by laundry and sewing work done by the residents.

As they were originally in Ireland.
Though I believe it was only the catholic ones that ran up until the 1990’s. I may be wrong with that 2nd fact though.

Not disagreeing as the history of them, in Ireland in particular, is horrendous but I can't find any references to the Edinburgh ones being RC

In Ireland, the Magdalene Asylums, or Magdalene Laundries, were usually run by Roman Catholic orders and different to the Scottish system.

Anyway enough of that, I'm busy searching for pictures of synagogues in Dalry!

Good shout. Forgot about that. I was probably in it more when it was Oblomov as well😀I assume it was Oblomov - Carwash - Wash.

Was it not called Misty's on the Mound at one time before Oblomov?
