AS a kid, I've walked past this literally thousands of times.  Right across the street from this is the church where the memorial service for Dave Mackay was held.

did you ever pop into the sauna when older :whistling:

There is one thing for sure thing, it wasn't taken on 8th February that year because there are no crowds out celebrating my birth.

It was a plumbers merchant and the trade counter was in the back lane and you drove into the bus station to reach it.

I was in there many a time as a apprentice plumber early 80's.

They had a showroom at the front facing onto York Place and it was a Casino the last time I passed it.

Nope. I stayed away as  an adult because the whole area became gentrified and very gay* - the start of "the pink triangle".

* I'm not homophobic, I just didn't like what was done to the pubs in the area.

The Clouts and down the street a wee bit Mrs Craigies shop. We went there sometimes especially to get a bottle of Lemonade because she got it from Globe, and the bottles were shaped like a globe. Thats kids because the shape of the bottle was different you thought the product was superior.

Yes that would be it in my police time also. The police box still had the air raid siren on it.

The old building on the right was HMS Claverhouse. Before WW2 it was the Granton Hotel. I was told it was haunted by victims of the Tay Bridge disaster who stayed there the night before.

Even though I was brought up a stones throw from there my strongest memory was sledging down the hill after midnight at new year on tea trays with loads of pissed adults around the place. Would probably have been 1978 as the green goddess army fire engines were all based in the square during the firemen’s strike.

Previously Laurie's Bar and before that Doyle's Bar

My grandfather worked for George Doyle in this bar after he was demobbed from the RAF in the late 1940s.  It was handy for him as he lived at 1 Glen Street, directly opposite the pub!

As do I, had Grandparents who lived at Heriots Cross, I can always remember there was a Salvation Army (or similar) doss house that I used to walk past before the turn-off up the hill to their house.

It's the demolition of the Eastern General Hospital. No idea why that was left standing

I’m no expert but were the windows and door filled in to maintain the integrity of the openings? Possibly plans were in place to keep the frontage and build a modern building onto the back of it?

A wee update for you. I contacted my mate last night and he confirmed that his dad never worked at Bothwell St, but that his grandad, one Charlie Hogg did. He also lived in Bothwell St, just across the road from his work, so not much of a commute for Charlie.

As you stated, Charlie was a jambo, as was his son Alec and his grandson (my mate) John. A surprising amount of Abbeyhill residents that I knew were jambos, given the proximity to Easter Road.

Sorry I’m way late to this, but was the printers in Bothwell Street right on the corner of Easter Road with one end of the building facing an old church?

If it was I lived in a top floor flat there after it was converted. I was told it used to be a commercial property but not what it had been.

Pretty sure there was one in St Leonard’s Street too - I was living in S. Oxford Street at the time. (Mid-80’s)

I looked at that without my specs on and thought the rivets were cars on an elevated motorway in some Abercrombie Plan / Fritz Lang ‘Metropolis’ nightmare plan for Edinburgh!

Did someone stay in Granton Crescent or even Granton Medway.

Went to Sea Cadets there.

My old stomping grounds of Abbeyhill, taken I think from the top deck of a bus outside the Station Bar in Cadzow place looking towards Montrose Terrace & East Norton place. On the right are the Abbeyhill Colonies, where I grew up. Centre left, the white building is Field & Stream a huntin' shootin' & fishin' shop. I vividly recall all sorts of rifles displayed in the window, unthinkable these days. Centre right is the Artisan bar, still there & largely unchanged in layout, at least it was last time I was in there, all too many years ago.
