Gobsmacked - again.

That building wasn't there in the 1960s - I'm sure but I can't remember what was, even tho I remember the garage being built.

Bizarrely, if you Google the image (?) , it comes up Esso - which is what the petrol station originally was.

Right opposite the garage is what is now a church but it was where RLS went to school.

?

There has been a few on here that I just can’t get my head around. The biggest shock for me, was what was originally where the Usher Hall now stands. I hadn’t ever thought about it, just assumed it was the only thing that ever stood there

Nope, genuinely thought it was still an Esso garage, it's been a while since I went past there.

Is that a wild stab in the dark or is it because the pub is called the Canonmills Bar?

Morris and gibb building was removed and the main building behind was retained and is the facade of the standard life building IIRC

That must be around where the Esso garage is at the bottom of Canonmills.

I'll be the pedant. It's a BP garage. I only know this as I pass everytime I go and come home from work.

Later it was called Pentland's

Any idea when it closed ? As I said earlier I can recall the garage being built (early 1960s - I think  ?) but I don't have any memory of that building. This has really intrigued me.

The attached photo of the pub as Peatland's is dated March 1960 so it may have been around that time it closed for demolition

Yes used to drink in there on fairly regular basis. In the early days there used to be hordes of standard life crumpet in as it was cheap drink. But as the prices started to rise and your wotherspoons started doing 99p pints and cheap nips - the poontang dried up

For all of you interested in Edinburgh history it’s worth mentioning that it is the doors open weekend on the 29/30th September.

http://www.doorsopendays.org.uk/find-a-building/?area=7511

its one of my favourite weekends in Edinburgh when you get to see a lot of areas not normally open to the public. There really is something for everyone and we always took the kids to it as it’s all free and let them see why we love our great city.

unfortunately I will be out of the country so will miss it and the Motherwell/St Johnstone games!

Haymarket by the looks or it. The building top left is still the main feature there.
