Granton Square must have been a transport hub back in the day

Used that ferry once when it restarted for a short spell in the early 90s. 20 minute journey and they opened a bar!

Not sure about it being a hub, but I think both the number 9 and 10 terminated at Granton Square many years ago?

Looks like a younger Neil McCann had popped in for a fly pint.

In my very young days Sunday walks often started after a tram ride to the Granton Terminus in a #8 tram. I seem to recall in the war years there was a Naval hospital there,I remember to some extent we done one walk where we left Granton and walked along the waterfront and got a bus somewhere to Waverley Bridge. My fathers walks were no gentle stroll in the park, they were virtually a speed walk and lasted in the region of two hours plus. At eighty six years of age I still get comments about how fast I walk and how often, I have always and still am reasonably physically fit, and have minor fat, and I am sure it is all accounted for by my psychological attitude learned in childhood that if you cannae walk there its no worth going.

St John's Road furniture shop called something like Forrests? Later become the Village small market style shops,  as your next photo shows. Worked in Village books for about 9 months probably about 1982 or 83.

During WW2 my father worked there while it was a depot for military vehicle maintenance. His job description was Coachbuilder. At the end of the war the employees went on strike, my father of course done picket duty, and lived without any pay. The strike was settled, and on the Friday the guys opened their pay envelopes and checked their raises, my father had no raise, he approached the Union rep who told him Aye Jimmy that's right, your no a time served tradesman, your no really in the Union because of that, I believe his red head probably went into action never heard, but he ceased his employment there and was fortunate enough to get a job at SMT Fountainbridge where he worked for many years until retirement.

That experience and other life experiences caused him to brain wash as early in his sons fourth year of age started his program of convincing him that a police career, with regular pay, no strikes, free work clothing and a pension at a relatively young age was the only job to get. It worked I done thirty six years, retired at fifty six and have had a good pension now for thirty years, thanks Dad.

Built in the sixties and still known as “the new building” when I attended in the eighties.

I was thinking more along the lines of the trams. They served Granton pretty well and can only think it was because of the ferries to and from Fife.

Opened 1909, I think. Marine Gardens was an early “theme/amusement park” and the site is now the Marine Gardens Lothian Bus depot. Part of the leisure site contained a sports ground which was used by Leith Athletic FC  between 1928-1936 before relocating to Old Meadowbank. Leith won promotion to the old First Division from here in 1929-30 and spent two seasons in the top flight. So, the mighty Jambos played here beside the seaside! The ground attendance record is disputed but may be 18,000 v. East Fife in Leith’s promotion-winning year. Great image 👍

Would you have a year for that top pic?

I worked as a plumbers apprentice 81-83 and we used to hire the big 3 piece ladders from the window cleaners shop which was located there.

Looks suspiciously like me humphing the ladders.

I’ll try and find it again pal, think it was about 83. It should be in my recently deleted folder, but they have all disappeared, don’t know if it has anything to do with the update I installed 🤷‍♂️

It has been widened at least once, I seem to remember around the 80's.

The last major upgrade (mid-late 80s?) was to improve the footpaths, railings and drainage, but it had been widened a few decades earlier.
