Maroon Sailor
Upon the outbreak of World War 2 the pool was camouflaged so as to appear to be a field from above, preventing it from being used as a marker for enemy bombers targeting the power station next door. The pool reopened on the 1st June 1946 and was as popular as ever, though that may have something to do with Sean Connery working there as a lifeguard during the 1950’s. This was 1970 -72, pay was pretty good, £2 quid for 2 hours work plus my skin. Only real mistake I made was trying to sell a paper to a guy, seemingly asleep in a side ward. Turned out he was deid! He may have appreciated a News of the Next World. Papers were picked up by me from a guy called Harry who had a pitch at the end of Raeburn place just before the Raeburn Hotel. A short walk underneath the bridge leads to the Old Chain Pier pub. The former Trinity Station (now a private dwelling) is situated out of shot to the right of the picture. Travelling north, you’d reach Scotland St Station beside the former St Bernard’s FC Gymnasium ground. I’m guessing the photo below shows the continuation of the line toward Granton. That supporting embankment has since been removed affording the houses opposite an uninterrupted sea view. No doubt that’s been reflected in the prices!
