Nuffield Transplant Unit at The Western to be precise . The first building ever built, specifically for the purpose of organ transplant.

By Peter Womersley , who also did this house, near Selkirk in 1958.

Upon the outbreak of World War 2 the pool was camouflaged so as to appear to be a field from above, preventing it from being used as a marker for enemy bombers targeting the power station next door. The pool reopened on the 1st June 1946 and was as popular as ever, though that may have something to do with Sean Connery working there as a lifeguard during the 1950’s.

I remember there used to be public toilets to the left from just about where this photo was taken, in the middle of the square, quick probably shut down years ago.  I was here at a Lebanese restaurant 2 or 3 years ago, just to the left of where the walnut whip advert is, can't recall it's name or if it's still open.

That's a good comparison - the before and now of that area has always confused me

In the old phot I now see the van was parked on the pavement on Charles Street facing South

I seemed to have it in my head the entrance to the Argyle Arms was facing South

The Argyle isn't the red dot - it's on the opposite corner, with Crichton St - so the mosque would be to the right on the photo today.

Thanks @Montgomery Brewster for putting up the map & aerial.  Shows how that areas changed completely.

I remember the Nuffield unit well, passing it each Sunday morning to my job selling Sunday newspapers and fags to WGH staff and patients alike going round all the wards with my trolley.

This was 1970 -72, pay was pretty good, £2 quid for 2 hours work plus my skin.

Only real mistake I made was trying to sell a paper to a guy, seemingly asleep in a side ward. Turned out he was deid! He may have appreciated a News of the Next World.

Papers were picked up by me from a guy called Harry who had a pitch at the end of Raeburn place just before the Raeburn Hotel.

I though the same but the playground and the destroyed structure with what looks like a playground has me beat.

Could be wrong but is that not Bristo Street with the south end of the old Potterrow on the other side of the pub. I remember the pub, is was a generally quiet and peaceful one, don't remember ever attending any trouble there, Marshal Street would be up at the top end of both streets.

Aye it does look awfy narrow.   If its the main bridge (Gillespie ROad to Colinton village), its currently got a pavement on each side plus 2 lanes.     Is the current bridge a rebuild of this one  perhaps ?

It has been widened at least once, I seem to remember around the 80's.

Rodney St , just down from the ol Ritz cinema.  I must have walked down that lane at the bus stop a thousand times. The shop on the right of pic was our butcher. The old guy died of a heart attack watching his beloved Hibs get pumped 6-1 in the 73 cup final.

Great images! Top photo is the bridge at Trinity. A short walk underneath the bridge leads to the Old Chain Pier pub. The former Trinity Station (now a private dwelling) is situated out of shot to the right of the picture. Travelling north, you’d reach Scotland St Station beside the former St Bernard’s FC Gymnasium ground. I’m guessing the photo below shows the continuation of the line toward Granton. That supporting embankment has since been removed affording the houses opposite an uninterrupted sea view. No doubt that’s been reflected in the prices!
