He maybe knows that there's little point trying to persuade them to get rid of him for reasons of honesty and integrity, so he's trying the self preservation angle instead. If, as time goes by, Johnson becomes a liability over this shameful affair, they'll drop him. Particularly the new "red wall" MPs still think Johnson can keep them in the HoC. Time will tell.
