Inflation

It's definitely starting to bite. I've tried to mitigate it by travelling less and wearing warmer clothes around the house. Seems to be working fairly well.

I haven't been doing the star jumps to keep warm yet though.

Shite as it is, inflation is by no means unique to the U.K. The CPI rates for the Eurozone and the US are currently 7.5% and  8.5% respectively, both even worse than here.

If you're in a hurry just blend the oats with cold water and sieve the "milk" through a strainer. Much cheaper....👍

The joys of a global economy... I guess the question is are their figures more realistic than ours.

Indeed, they are all inter-connected to some point, if the Eurozone or the US are suffering from high inflation, then the cost of their goods are going to be higher for the UK to import, especially commodities, thus leading to higher inflation here in the UK.

Energy  costs:
France - capped to 4%
Germany - capped to 5%
Italy - 3.5 billion euros set aside to mitigate
Spain - 16 billion euros for mitigation
UK? - 53%  cap and a  £200 "levy".

But nah, it's all just a moan at the tories and not a legitimate cost of living crisis for millions of our countrymen.

Johnson could come round and piss through your letterboxes and you'd still bend over.  Pathetic.

Exactly. The EU, US and whatever bloody other places you can name have feck all to do with the UK government's theft of UK taxes. NI rise to reclaim the billions lost to the Chancellor righting off the gifts to the Tory pals. VAT increases to sections of the economy who needs a VAT reduction. The lifting of the energy cap that will almost certainly make people take their own lives. Add on the price of fuel, which they won't do anything worth a feck about. Then there's Brexit, Rwanda and the Parties during the lockdown. But hey, it's no the Tories fault.

But, but Europe, but, but, America.

Dire warnings from energy bosses to a commons select committee this morning, with the boss of Scottish Power saying that the price cap rise in October is going to be "horrific" and are calling for the Government to intervene.

Centrica boss said that they are seeing 1 in 10 customers falling into debt and this is before this month's price cap rise really kicks in.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61149569

I do think the Government is going to have to take action, especially for next winter, if they don't thousands will freeze to death.

The government can take the obvious action and either properly cap energy prices or indeed impose a windfall tax on the profits of the big 6.

Noticed it in B and M last week when I went in for seeds for our bird feeders.

Sunflower Hearts always £1.00 a bag.

Now up to £1.50 for the same sunflower hearts.

That is inflation.

This particular government won't do shite all about profiteering until October, when people face actually dying.

Mind you, people actually dying from their policies hasn't stopped them before, so maybe not.

What would spark action is if they get pumped in the upcoming local elections.

But then they'd probably instead just push some new draconian gobshite policy aimed at immigrants/the woke left and sell off something else to appeal to their brain dead voting sheep.

I think so too. There will be a public outcry if they don’t. The economic forces which cause a spike in inflation every few years are usually global, affect everywhere and aren’t easy to control.

What can be controlled however is how individual Governments respond to it and this one’s response has been absolutely pathetic. In the case of Energy prices, it’s literally a threat to human life.

Not only is it pathetic, but the paltry £150 energy rebate is being very poorly implemented. The easiest way to do it is to deduct it from Council Tax bills but they’re insisting on making individual payments to every Council Tax payer, inflicting a huge and avoidable administration burden on Councils and creating fraud opportunities.

Isn't that the way it's working?  I got £150 taken straight off my council tax bill, this month was free and the remainder spread over the next 9 months.  Are different council areas doing it differently?

When many people won't be able to afford to turn their heating on in the winter, then yes, that is indeed a threat to human life.

I must be missing something. These energy companies are making huge profits, but are calling on the government to intervene to mitigate against the impact of the prices they charge? I understand that their costs will have gone up, but, bar nationalising the energy sector, what exactly is meant to happen here? Government paying folks' leccy bills so the companies can continue to make billions?

You've got it in one.

No one's forcing these wanks to charge the absolute maximum they're legally allowed to, it stirs my coffee that they say "oh won't someone help, what a terrible situation' when they pay out dividends to shareholders.

But yeah, also, government - stop ****ing letting them do this!

Should never have happened, I'm old enough to remember when they were all sold off, and some people at the time warned that prices would go through the roof...........in fairness it's taken much longer, but the point remains that if they were still state owned then the government of the day could act quicker and more effectively on price increases.

Plus, billions aren't siphoned out in profits while people slip into fuel poverty. It's pretty disgusting.

In rural areas there's little other choice, we here in Innerleithen have a Co-op, Premier Store, local butcher & baker and that's about it as far as food shops are concerned, needless to say none are all that cheap, especially the Co-op, so unless you have a car your very limited, that's maybe why online shopping is very popular here as you can get Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's & Morrisons shopping, I do this myself from time to time.

It's shocking and the government need to do something about fuel prices...but equally the UK isn't that cold, surely the idea of folk freezing to death in their homes is a bit dramatic?

Age might have something to do with it, no?  If a frail 90 year old is scared to put on the heating because the media have frightened them witless and then forgets to put on extra layers it could end badly.

Hopefully people look out for each other a bit more next winter, sure they will.

Never linked Teso Lidl or Aldi at all really  Prices are definitely going up though.  A 6  pack of cheese and onion golden wonder crisps  now £ 2.30 when they used to be around £1.80   or sometimes lower.  Deck that.. I am on a constant diet but wanted some choice in what i eat not having to eat what i could afford. :)   Is there anything going down in price ?
