The Governments are over reacting.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10306211/DR-ANGELIQUE-COETZEE-alerted-wider-world-Omicron-believe-Britain-overreacting.html#article-10306211

'I alerted the wider world to Omicron - and I believe Britain is overreacting':  Doctor Angelique Coetzee, the South African GP who knows more about its effects than anyone, calls for calm despite variant cases spiking 50 per cent in 24 hours

Yet you only have to look at the picture in South Africa, where the world's first known cases of Omicron were spotted, to realise this reaction is out of all proportion to the risks posed by this variant.

And I should know — because I am the doctor who first raised the alarm about Omicron back in November.

The variant appeared to have been circulating in South Africa for some time, having previously been identified in Botswana. It was my duty — both as a GP and as chair of the South African Medical Association — to report my concerns.

A hard lockdown would slow the process of Omicron making its way through the population and allowing people to develop the vital antibodies which will move your population towards 'herd immunity'.

The next variant that comes along might be slower spreading but more severe, and so we will need all the help we can get from such natural immunity.

That can only be of value to us all — unlike restrictive measures that hit the economy hard and will bring about more hardship and poverty, with no gain beyond satisfying the politicians' need to be seen to be doing something.

So my message to Boris and his ministers is this: stay calm. Take it day by day and do not panic people, because that will only end in chaos. You are already seeing problems with the NHS vaccination booking system following the Prime Minister's address to the nation of an accelerated booster plan on Sunday.

In the fight against Covid, as in life generally, it's important to pick your battles, and in over-reacting to Omicron we are in danger of missing out on the benefits of a variant which could be a friend rather than a foe.

That doctor also said that those in hospital had other issues that contributed/caused them to be hospitalised. Is it really hard to draw any firm conclusions regarding this variant ?

Leaving aside the issue mass infection this variant will potentially cause on the working population can we at least conclude this is a mild virus. Yes people will die but the percentages especially among the fit, well and vaccinated must be ****ing minuscule.

We'll just have to wait and see.  It would be foolish to determine definites.

Worrying comments from GPs today about the impact of Project Booster on normal GP services ☹️

Don’t understand why they can’t get the army to help again. Pop up stalls around the place (or a vaccine bus/truck) instead of trying to squeeze more out of the existing workforce and fixed locations.

Because Spaffer, in a desperate attempt to take the focus off his lying and general shitehousery, has stood up on Sunday and said something that is not deliverable, shuffled his papers then wandered off to leave everyone else to clean up the carnage he's just unleashed.

There was no forethought about what capacity was, or how quickly they can set up pop-ups or trucks or commandeer community centres, get volunteers, staff etc

Just the lying fat ride standing up giving it the big one as per, whilst the adults of PHE had to reign it in yesterday.

Before pandemic, it was almost impossible to get doctors appointment. During pandemic, it was impossible to get appointment.

Project booster won't make any difference except for some of these GP's, they may have to actually see a patient face to face.

I know that's a shock to their system and they'd prefer to sit cosied away from everyone and leave nasty things like patients to nurses whilst they sit writing out prescriptions and dream up ways to spend their money, but national emergency and all that.

Our local GP practice has been pretty good during pandemic, which has been great considering I have two young children. Phone appointment in the first instance and then either a video or in person appointment as a follow up as required. It feels like it’s actually been easier to speak to a GP than previously (albeit over the phone)

This just shows how inept and stupid this Government is.
Raab was on Sky this morning saying 250 people were in hospital suffering from the Omricon variant when in fact it’s only 10.
They then had to release a statement correcting his gaff.

Not normally one to defend Boris but it's not the first time he has announced something seemingly undeliverable and yet they have just about hit the targets, even in the devolved nations who are far from supportive of him.  Now that is more down the excellent work of people on the ground delivering things that seemed impossible.

Upscaling boosters is far more palatable than increasing restrictions to slow it down so we can get the boosters done, so lets hope that Boris is right and we can get everyone (nearly) before the end of the year and don't have to suffer too much disruption to out lives.

I have to say I have had no problems with my Surgery, in fact it has been slightly better than before.

I accept that has not been the case for everyone.

To be fair to Raab, it can't be easy to provide the correct figures when being interviewed. It's not as if he has a team behind him to keep him up to date.

Even if I am going to post something on here with actual figures I usually double check them.

I was thinking about his gaff and wondered if the figure was going to be released later today in an attempt to boost the take up the vaccine and help the vote tonight. But then that would a cynical thought and the lying Tories would never do that.

Tom they will probably be saying two jags doesn’t protect you from omicron.

Now if they are saying that two jags doesn’t protect you anymore from omicron and need a 3rd jag then why are they going to bring in this passport rule down south that we have already?

They are saying you need to be double jagged to get into places but on other hand are saying two jags isn’t enough to protect you anymore so need another one so what’s the point in a passport to proof your double jagged🤷‍♀️

I honesty don’t think they have a bloody clue

I was in London last week with work and tbh they have to do something down there, it's a riot in comparison to here!

Pubs/clubs with posters in the window advertising nights with 'slogans' such as 'No masks, just fun', folk only wearing masks on public transport if there is someone sat next to them etc

I even had a few mocking comments for putting a mask on when moving around the office, with folk telling me that 'Nicola wouldn't find out and I didn't HAVE to wear a mask.

On Sky now Dr Kate Bingham is answering questions from the Science and Technology Committee. Amongst other things this inept government regarding the fight against Covid19 she wrote to the Government with recommendations that were never answered and when if she was surprised she never got an answer Dr Bingham said yes!
All in all Dr Bingham is laying bear how useless this lot are!

They've 'clarified' figures on a number of occasions after the fact throughout the pandemic.

In this instance, the narrative he was spinning was a 'significant' number in hospital with the new variant. When pressed he's gone with 250 as it:

- over-eggs the pudding to suit

- he'd have been laughed at if he said 10 as it's clearly not a significant number

Inept? Yes, he is...by very virtue of the yarn he was trying to spin and gett called out whilst in the act.

Inept for saying 250 by mistake? Absolutely not, there's one thing this lot are good at and it's conning people. He knew fine well the number was nowhere near 250.

Yep so pop up, mobile and other similar options for delivering these may be limited.

Yet more reasons as to why this booster roll out will be tough in terms of time scales.

His explanation of why he said 250 then 9 and finally 10, make him sound far too stupid to be able to perform the kind of deception you are talking about. There are currently 6223 Covid patients in English Hospitals, the fact he has had to backtrack make it look even less 'scary' that if he'd just got the number right

I can't fault people for retaining a bit of scepticism or puzzlement about what's going on.  When you try to consider all of the variables and predictions,  it's all a bit of a mystery.  The scale of suspected cases that haven't come forward,  the measured doubling rate,  the concerns about the volume of hospitalisations,  the consequences of large numbers of key worker absences and no apparent urgency to lockdown.  No wonder people find it hard to buy in.

I think there may well be scientific theories and / or strategy going on that isn't being disclosed.  Critical national resilience alone a monumental concern.  Maybe the only way to deal with it is to operate an epidemiological strategy that they would rather not divulge.

Yet we have a war and peace thread on Tory lies. They know exactly what they're doing...there's no way he gets up there and doesn't broadly know the figure.

Misheard the question...aye right.

Stupid people don't end up in the government without at least having one or two other things:

- leverage

- deceit

He may have both, he may just have the latter but I'm not buying he was 25x out or misheard the question.
