Early thoughts, I’d like to see a trio of Damour, Whelan and Irving.

Irving is a good passer, good awareness and pops the ball off quickly. He’s  shown a good defensive workrate when the ball breaks down for us.

Playing alongside these experienced players may help him with their old heads knowing when to sit in and let him play.

And I wish we’d let combinations play together for a while to see if they can gain understanding and effectiveness. Instead of chopping and changing as we tend to do.

Agreed

Irving played very well against United once he settled looked far more composed than any appearance previous. Made a mistake for the red card but then took one for the team to recover.

I’m sure the guys on here who attend regularly said he had been the stand out for the reserves definitely a player who has potential to step forward and with the likes of Damour and Whelan around him it could be the making of him

Can't see that working as it's the same Immigration Rules - unless that's been devolved since I've been sunning myself in Cyprus?

The panel that decides is local though, remember the Jason Scotland permit, it was Scottish football figures on the committee that decided.

Immigration laws and work permits are as you can imagine quite complicated. In short the essence of the decision is “are there others who can do the same job or better who would not require a permit?” As I say, it’s more complicated than that but it’s why there’s a panel who would make the decision based on the ‘job’ the applicant would be taking and the merits of the application. For example the right back Celtic signed didn’t meet the automatic criteria, but it’s well documented that they are in need of a right back so the applicant is more than likely going to have their permit utilised as intended. When we applied for Nombil the panel didn’t see that the permit would be utilised as he would go straight into the youth setup.

There’s been high profile denials over the years, most notably Ronaldinho to Arsenal I believe. But it’s all dependant on the applicant and employer. A panel reviewing Meshino’s case would look at the talent but also the fact that the employer would not utilise the permit (play the player) often if at all. However a panel up here may review a player deemed the ‘Japanese Messi’ (which I have my doubts as at 21 he’s not even played for the national side yet) that’s just signed for Man City as someone who would have their permit utilised at Hearts. Think back to David Obua, his permit was given after an appeal and Laszlo giving personal testimony as his ex boss at Uganda. Obua wouldn’t have gotten a permit down south (don’t laugh) as he wouldn’t get a game/utilise his permit.

I have no idea if Meshino, Itakura or anyone else is signing, but the permit is certainly possible. I would have my doubts over any panel awarding them however.

Last paragraph, definitely.

I think lads like Irving need to experience different scenarios. It’s the only way they’ll learn. Certainly the ones like him who clearly have a bit quality and something to offer.  He doesn’t look scared to put his foot in either and maybe playing with competitors like Damour and Whelan will encourage that side of the game from him even more?

You’ll see these guys beside you sweating blood , you’ll then either want to match them or hide.  It can be a springboard.

Spot on imo.

I do think players like Clare are more a luxury although he does work , tackle all the things people claim he doesn’t he’s just not a Whelan , Damour type. Playing in front of a 3 like that he in theory wouldn’t have the same defensive responsibilities (dependent on coaches orders / who the manager is etc) and could thrive in that circumstance.

what really pissed me off on Saturday was the team that was out should of had such a solid defensive footing all the forward thinking players could of run riot , whereas they ran about like headless chicken.

Definitely. I’ve got highest hopes for Irving out of all the young lads. He’ll be a beast of a boy if he continues physically over the next 18 months.

Having Whelan there to talk him through games, encourage him and more importantly have his back would be amazing for his development.  I’m a big believer in partnerships throughout teams. One of the reasons I hate managers who tinker too much.

I'm not getting involved in the levein chat, simply because as bad as it seems at times I still feel like we're a bawhair away from a major click.

All the constituent parts are there, that's a pretty good team we've got. In theory.

I hope we click soon though, it's getting stressful keeping the faith.

Saying you don't want to sign good players is the same as saying you want Hearts to get beat.

Fair comment to say Levein is the problem but good players win games. And if he can't improve the side with a guy like Whelan then the case against him gets even stronger.

Its a very good team we have on paper , although I think we need a commanding solid GK , i think that will help the defence massively (for that read Berra😂). Problem is it needs to click fast. That team has enough about it to wipe the floor with teams and compete with rangers and celtic. Aberdeen took ages to get going last season but McInnes for all the Aberdeen fans detest him and his tactics had enough in the bank (and the new stadium chat) to ride through that. We don’t

Taking inspiration from Barack Columbo, I decided to stalk Mrs Whelans twitter...two tweets caught my eye. The first one, in which she liked a. Reply saying she’ll love Edinburgh (wonder what her initial, now removed tweet, said?) and the second, in which she tells a pal she’s celebrating one more year of football.

So Whelans signed a years deal, and the missus and bairns are comin too. And if Barack is Columbo, then I bagsy Kojak.

The earnings criteria would be surpassed within about 3 months for a Man City player, even at youth level. Visas that allow work are awarded due to family reasons (spouse, parent, child etc), medical reasons, asylum or business mainly. Football comes under the business category, although I believe as it’s a specialised profession that the regular visa route doesn’t apply. The points based system (like in Australia) would have zero affect on the decision in my opinion, it would still come down to the panel and whether the ‘applicant’ and ‘employer’ would ‘utilise the permit’ properly.

I think the fact Whelan has trained a couple of times with the squad point to this being a goer.  Also that's a great sign as it means he's getting his fitness and familiarity with his team mates so hopefully can come straight in.

That will be:

Pereira

Halkett

Washington

Damour

Walker

Whelan

I'll add White and Naismith

Also possibly Meshino too.

That's a cracking window by anyone's book.  Add that to a few of the kids being closer to ready, the squad looks superb.

Agreed.  After the Celtic game, we could be bottom, but I think we need to assess maybe 5 games in - so the two games after Celtic are make or break for me and you'd think getting close to there for everyone including the hierarchy.

I've still got hope.

It's been a terrific window, i think with the addition of the new keeper on loan and whelan (when he signs) to strengthen the gap between defence and attack we will improve massively

Have to admit I was a bit disappointed when Levein suggested he would only bring in 3 or possibly 4. I thought we lacked quality in quite a few places so looking more positive now. I expect he'll get pelters for saying one thing and doing another but it's more down to availability.
