A Salvation Army officer burning a copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover after using tongs to carry out the bookshop.
The Paperback Bookshop in George Square in about 1991.

And a rhino hanging out the window watching her do it.

Must like older women in uniform as he's got the horn.

Is that not a lot earlier than 1991?

1961 would make more sense.

I agree

I think the Private Dwellings (Wild Animals) Act of 1962 finally made it illegal for Ungulates to take up residence in ground floor tenement flats in city centre areas.

So that sort of dates it.

That and Lady Chatterleys lover being finally published in the UK 1960.

The rhino’s head being on display meant the shop was open for business.

It's not George Square it's Charles Street. There's a wee rhino on the spot the shop was.

Ah right, I’ve always seen it referred to as George Square. Good to know.

Sorry if I came across as pendatic, if the wind's blowing in the right direction it's a gob away from George Square.

I pick up contract customers from there all the time, I cannot believe I’ve never noticed that. It’s directly in front of me when I park up, so looking right at it🤪...it is late at night though😬

Even though it's a lot smaller, I feel slightly better about not seeing that bloody lighthouse. :D

The Varsity Bar was in Lindsay Place (opposite Greyfriars Bobby) where the extension to the Royal Museum is now. The Territorial Bar was one shop unit away. The Hole in the Wa’ Bar was in Bristo Port again on the site of the museum extension.

To the right of the Burton's shop, perhaps a bit down but certainly before the corner where the John Lewis entrance is now was there not a dirty book shop?  Not a shop that was not clean but a shop that sold adult reading material😄

It used to go down Newhaven Road like the 11, the 7 did it as well.

Always knew it to go from Newcraighall to Muirhouse. I think it used to go down Pilrig Street so that would tie in with Newhaven Road

Hang on. You’re right and I’m talking pish. Getting confused with them stopping it going along Pilrig Street.

That's a beauty of Sighthill Flats.

They must have seemed so modern at the time and with the two double level car parks behind which only ever saw a burned out TWOC once in a while.

Any date on that pic?

Used to trudge up that park every day after school at Forresters.

Cutting through Broomhouse would have been quicker but I would never have made the Calder Road subway 😊

Was there not a Joke shop/Magic shop near to where the Varsity was?

The crossbar is hiding the windows of my old flat 😀 12/4 weir court. Ideal viewing of sighthill kids fighting broom house kids on the playing fields.

The "Top Storey" club was bit farther up on the right.
