Where have all the people gone. Such a bustling city centre. Population keeps going up, yet it gets quieter.

I remember Princes Street being like that - could hardly move

People don’t need to go into town for clothes shopping and the likes, online or out of town retail parks have seen to that.

Sad but true. Folks not going in at night now either though☹️

Is that Lauriston Place by any chance?  That looks like the path that goes past Heriot's to the Grassmarket.

Any reason other than it was hideous and after recently throwing more money at it, still remains hideous.

Nope. My mum used to work at King's Buildings so we used to drive past it a lot when I was a youngster and for whatever reason I really hated it.  Pretty random and probably irrational but I've just always hated it.

Mrs JJ had an ancestor who died here at number 35 in 1914.

As far as I can tell, 35 is roughly where the tree is, on the top floor around the back.

My sisters husband had a wee shop just before the steps to Grassmarket where many Heriots boys went to buy candies etc. Probably fifties and sixties.

Was that the one on the corner opposite? If so it's still a wee shop.

If you look at the picture if you walked up the street to the stairs I think it was opposite a side gate to the school,

Yes, the ‘path’ is The Vennel.

Bloody auto-correct changed it to Vernel!

On the way down the Vennel on the left where the steps start was a Council Nursery. My sister attended in the late 70's.I cant say what it was before  but it calls itself 6VT Youth Cafe.Probably a social work project.

We’ve seen the sister-in-law but not my wife.  Apparently, she was too wee for them to get a uniform to fit her, so she never actually got filmed.

Always the Vennel for me too. Used to walk up and down that pretty much every second day as a kid.

Getting on with a job climbing the ladder without a risk assessment in sight. The good old man at the bottom as your safety number.

Now filling out forms for working at height can take longer than the job itself !
