Bomb damage in Craigentinny, 1943.

A lone Nazi bomber, presumably targeting the docks at Leith, or perhaps a secondary target of the massive Munro textile factory (which made parachutes and uniforms among other such wartime materials), dropped a single stick of 4 bombs whilst flying out to sea and back to base.

The first hit the (luckily empty) air-raid shelter of the factory.

The second demolished one corner of the ancient Craigentinny Castle, killing the groundskeeper who lived there.

The other two bombs hit houses in Loaning Road and Loaning Crescent, killing 3 more people.

Before the purists jump all over me, I know that Queensferry is not in Edinburgh, but I think this picture is interesting.

Opened in 1890 (a mere 25 years after Americans stopped bashing each other over the head with muzzle-loading muskets), this bridge was, and is, an engineering marvel.  The official death toll for the bridge is 57, up to 73 if you include the building of the bridge approaches.

Love this picture, most of them seem to be taken from the other direction.

That Cycle Shop in Morrison Street, i went there with money from my first pays at fifteen had just started working, and bought my first brand new bike a Dawes, racing handlebars, Derailleur gears, and on Saturday afternoons in the summer took off for long runs on the bike.  I think that bike was the first thing that I had truly earned for myself, that store is important to my past.

Well chuffed I posted this now, hope it brought a wee smile bob :thumb:

It is. Roads were so much wider it seems and with fewer vehicles and less traffic lights

Eva place first on the right once you went straight on up to the left on Blackford Avenue, take it that’s what you mean :thumb:
