¼½¾
The building centre right is Canal Street station which used the Scotland Street tunnel to get to Granton Harbour. This is before the Forth Bridge. For Those travelling north, a ferry from there took you to a train at Burntisland. Zoomed in on sign.

Tazio
When they redeveloped the Empire it was a very clever bit of architecture. Everything front of house was rebuilt as a modern building and everything upstage of the proscenium arch was rebuilt as a massive state of the art stage. So you essentially have a brand new theatre building sandwiching a Victorian auditorium. This was worth doing as the original theatre was designed by Frank Matcham who was like the theatre equivalent of Archibald Leach the stadium designer and designed most of the great theatres in the UK. Maple Leaf
Prefabs were a common sight in Edinburgh in the 1940s and 1950s. About 4,000 were built after the war to solve a severe housing shortage. They were cold and damp in winter, but had their own back and front garden and, incredibly, each one had its own wee fridge, an unusual item in houses in those days. This is the one I lived in at Hyvots in Gilmerton.
