Back to the first post, Parsons Peebles, served by East Pilton railway

I remember that incident, we lived about half a mile away and you could hear the sound of it, like a jet taking off that went on for what seemed ages to a kid.

The building centre right is Canal Street station which used the Scotland Street tunnel to get to Granton Harbour. This is before the Forth Bridge.  For Those travelling north, a ferry from there took you to a train at Burntisland.

The height of tenement in the top photo! Must be 12 stories high.

Some sort of massive explosion/fire in Parsons Peebles which was a factory that made transformers etc for power stations and the like. I've presumed that is what the photo is as there was another major fire at it in the 90's, the one I'm talking about must have been in the late 70's.

EDIT. Turns out I'm talking shite and that image is of the fire in 1999.

When they redeveloped the Empire it was a very clever bit of architecture. Everything front of house was rebuilt as a modern building and everything upstage of the proscenium arch was rebuilt as a massive state of the art stage. So you essentially have a brand new theatre building sandwiching a Victorian auditorium. This was worth doing as the original theatre was designed by Frank Matcham who was like the theatre equivalent of Archibald Leach the stadium designer and designed most of the great theatres in the UK.

This looks like Saughton Road, where Whinpark Medical Centre is now.  Did buses used to go into Saughton Mains?

The 3 terminus (shown here) was Saughton Mains but it just came off the Calder Road turning right in to that crescent and roun to the bus stance without going through Saughton Mains itself

Hook - if my memory serves me right this is what was originally the Ladyfield Bar then became  the Morrison Park and ended up as the Auld Reekie Bar before being demolished. See attached OS Map from 1940

Iceland is right on the junction with Northfield Broadway. The house in the picture (I think remains in part) is still there with a couple of newer ones.

Cheers Stuart - was thinking it may have been the Morrison Park. Was the Barley Bree on the same side further down Morrison St?

Looks like it. Must have been taken when they were building the high rise flats that they blew up a few years ago!!

The flats were at the next roundabout along the road, heading west.

Edit:  @Seymour M Hersh not quite got the hang of the quote thing.

I wasn't setting it as a question John but I think you are correct although from the height of it it could be that upper level of shops accessed from Castlehill/Johnston Terrace?

Did the flats not overlook the football pitches? It looked like the old changing rooms at the top of the picture which is why i thought it was them. Maybe it's not Saughton but Broomhouse Rd in the picture?

I think that's an electric sub station thing, which is still there, opposite Whinpark surgery.

Hook - it was a couple of doors further up Morrison St - have another look at the OS map!

Cheers, see it now, thanks Stuart. Was at Morrison St for work recently and was trying to work out where all the old boozers were - the bridge before the old Morrison Park is a good marker. All very corporate there now, changed days!

The old State picture house great junction street. When a young boy. You could go there for a shilling(5p) on a Saturday afternoon. Remember seeing two mules for sister Sara there.

The Barley Bree was next door to The Ladyfield which was on the corner, was my local for years.

My mum stayed opposite and a few of my mates lived above the Ladyfield, good few jambos drank there, it was run by the Demarco's at the time.

Maple Leaf

Prefabs were a common sight in Edinburgh in the 1940s and 1950s.  About 4,000 were built after the war to solve a severe housing shortage.

They were cold and damp in winter, but had their own back and front garden and, incredibly, each one had its own wee fridge, an unusual item in houses in those days.

This is the one I lived in at Hyvots in Gilmerton.

I lived in a prefab in the Calders as you say cold and damp but the gardens were huge, anybody else got any pics of the prefab.

Here's another view of it.  I think that's the chemist and the Co-op on the right.

I remember my dad always calling the "Odeon", the Empire. Used to be a source of myth from me. Now I still call the new "Odeon", the ABC.

It's a shame, what has happened to the old Odeon. It was a lovely cinema before they split it into smaller units. Saw a few concerts in there too.
