Anyone know what that chimney in the background is?

Oliver and Boyd Print Office was here from 1810, don't know if a printworks required a huge chimney though.

No idea, but it’s right in line with the chimney.

Always wondered what that looked like. Think that’s the clock that’s still in the hotel.

Trinity Kirk, demolished to make way for the Waverley station.

A view looking down on Holyrood, from the rubble of the Kirk, which was to be rebuilt. Most of these stones were stolen.

It was finally rebuilt and still stands today.

Is this 'The' Fountain Bridge? (1920)

I think I once read that the Union Canal was longer than it is now and that the canal basin would have been around Semple Street/Morrison Street. Would this bridge have been over the canal towards there?

To see the attached OS map from the late 1800s Port Hopetoun was where the cinema is now and the Port Hamilton Basin is also shown

Well spotted, never noticed it. I started to type how you know the dogs name, then thought I better have another wee look.

I had a black dog with that name.  It seemed like a good idea at the time.  :whistling:

My working career started with Lothian Regional Council and on a Thursday I had to take the cash bag from Cockburn Street to the cashroom at the LRC HQ. Always took my time, especially on a nice sunny day. One of the old boys in my office said that there was a tunnel from the LRC HQ to the court offices over the road. Unsure if he was winding me up (over 30 years ago) but could be easily believable as Edinburgh has a lot of stuff under our streets.

I would have believed that too. I remember not being happy when I found out they were knocking that down and building a hotel. Looking at this picture now, I don’t know why I was angry about it, not exactly a great bit of architecture.

I just watched the Dambusters movie last week, I was amazed the dogs name had been left in there, an was used so frequently, usually you get a wee blip when such words were usd and cannot hear them. Especially in North America.

I’ve not watched that movie for a while but I suspect it will be blipped in the UK.

The new building in the third picture is that the site of the Ritz. I used to go there sometimes after visiting relatives in Heriothill Terrace across from the Ritz.  In my police days also used to take our vehicles in the area behind the Ritz to the police garage in Brandon Terrace.

I was last in Edinburgh for three days in 2007, stuck to places I knew, if I went now I would need a street map to find places, as I don't think I would recognise anywhere.

The first pic - one of the founders of the Waverley Biscuit Factory  (If you've had a "black man" you've eaten their products ) was the proud owner of a piano that once belonged to Adolf Hitler.  Or so he claimed.

That's my understanding too. The canal ran all the way through to Port Hamilton. The old Dance Hall front is in the original pic, this I believe is the scene today. The bridge was moved to Leamington Road.
