I remember my dad always calling the "Odeon", the Empire. Used to be a source of myth from me. Now I still call the new "Odeon", the ABC.

It's a shame, what has happened to the old Odeon. It was a lovely cinema before they split it into smaller units. Saw a few concerts in there too.

I saw Hawkind  there in 1980.

Good one, looked at it and never had a clue, then realised you had the second image below. No chance that it was worse back then, than it is down there now.

The old odeon was previously called the new Victoria not the empire as shown above

Odeon, so sad that it was lost. So many happy memories from my youth, especially the Super Saturday Show :(

It's an absolute travesty the Odeon shutdown.

Supposed to be reopening shortly. Will have a few screens.

Although not seen much activity there lately.

As ever the priority bit out the back was yet more student accommodation

I remember going there as a child in the 90's and that screen feeling so grand in scale. It really was a great place to watch a film.

Oh well. Memory must be clouded and he was talking about the, now, Festival Theatre, maybe.

Still a shame about the Odeon. Many times standing in a long Q to see a blockbuster film. Stars in the ceiling to gaze up at as a wee boy.

The New Victoria was a beautiful facility in its heyday. When you entered the foyer after paying your fee there was like a lounge with tables and chairs where you could sit and wait for the show to start. Along one wall there was a place you could leave your coats, a cloakroom , and further along two toilets. on he other wall were a  line of doors, these were the entrances to private boxes, from which to watch the movies.  There was always an intermission, and Sandy Macpherson would come up from the orchestra pit and play a medley on the large famous Wurlitzer organ. It was a place oozing class. In the sixties it was the Odeon, the last movie I remember there was Sound of Music, and there were queues for the shows, all around St Patrick Square.

For a bit less fancy there was the Salisbury on South Clerk Street, it closed shortly after the war and C and J Browns converted it to a warehouse.

It is indeed. Love looking at all the structures, to see which buildings are still standing from all the old photographs.

Right you are.

Used to have my school dinners in there when I went to Gilmerton Primary School, right across the street.  The school is now a community centre.

Don't think so that's a 34 bus in the picture. Back then the buses going along Queensferry Rd would have been the 18, 41 and the 20 (part route, not Sundays). On the bus stop the 20 had a red ring around it.

First glance it looks like Princes Street.

The names of the 2 shops I’ve never heard of.

Thats what I thought.

Looks like it might say 'The Royal Hotel' above the brown shop.

The large doorway looks the same as in this Princes Street image. Where M&S is now?
