We can now modify the saying to, "dumb as a bucket of rocks," I think.

Enormous turnout at the various marches today. Who knows if it will do any good.

NRA membership apparently up 500k, AR-15 sales through the roof, bump stock sales at an all-time high.

Why don't big hard as feck Bob, Maple and yourself go and offer to protect America then. Going by your posts the Avengers should bring you out of retirement(Steve Rogers could do with a few mates his own age).

A shriveled dick swinging contest of posts.

I see the oldest gunmaking company in the US Remington Outdoor has filed for bankruptcy due to a slump in sales.

There could be a few hurting after the magnificent efforts by the youngsters on Saturday, with regards to the quote you used sometimes things are said in the fervor f the time, just like I have all the respect in the world for the kids in what they are doing for their future, all I ask is some respect for what we older have done in the past. Respect probably the most valuable thing you can receive, and the least costly to give.

Gun sales will soar if they feel they're about to be taken away.

While I'd love to celebrate this as some victory (and given that Remington makes the Bushmaster AR-15 that's the weapon of choice in these massacres there's some merit) it's as much a story of vulture capitalism as anything. Remington was bought by one of the big capital management firms in 2007 as freakout over a black President -- ahem, I'm sorry, concerns over evil Democrats who want to take everyone's guns -- sent gun sales through the roof in 2008. The suits rode Remington for all it was worth and now that all the people who actually want a gun in the US have like 34, gun sales have started to tail off, and having been thoroughly pumped dry of cash, Remington is now technically bankrupt. The drawdown of US troops abroad since 2008 means that side of their business can't prop them up either.

Which is why the NRA, which is effectively at this point nothing more than a lobbying agency for the gun manufacturers masquerading as a grassroots organization, continues to push increasingly hysterical videos trying to get the gun nuts to buy more.

Significant law enforcement presence at Santa Fe High School near Houston, Texas where there is a reported active shooter.

I don't know how serious it is but they have a helicopter :o .

Could you post them? CBS say similar but they're the only place I've seen fatalities mentioned.

Suspect apparently a student who pulled the fire alarm and began shooting, Nikolas Cruz-esque.

There was also a shooting at one of Trumps golf resorts, a man shouting things about Trump, he was armed with a gun and carrying a flag engaged police in gunfire and was wounded.

I follow various Houston-related things on social media. I’m sure it won’t take long for google to catch up.

And two days ago, a man killed four at the home of his ex-wife. Shootings are so routine, everyday occurrences. School shootings obviously catch the attention more easily.

I’m so glad I decided not to send my son to school there.

"We need to arm the teachers! And the students! And maybe the dinner ladies too. If Betsy the dinner lady had been able to engage this monster, everyone would've been saved.

"We also need to punish any student who walks out to protest. It's incredibly suspicious how these articulate, calm, brilliant, heroic young people have all appeared out of nowhere. It's clearly an antifa conspiracy against your Second Amendment rights! And besides: guns don't kill people. People kill people!

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thoughts and prayers are so important to me. I think and pray to God about how lucky I am every day - then go back to ****ing pornstars, cheating on my wife, taking blood money from the NRA and doing dirty business deals all over the place. It's what God wants. He talks to me all the time".

Sad state of affairs when something like this is such a regular occurrence that it doesn't really merit its own thread.

At the same time, always thought it worth having one US Gun Control superthread, since the same things keep getting trotted out over and over and over...

Peebo I seem to recall you lived in the Houston area, on CNN they mentioned the victims going to a hospital an hour from Houston, the shooting was at Santa Fe, the suspect apparently arrested.  The 22nd school shooting this year. It is suggested the shooter used a shotgun, in the late eighties our guys were issued with pump action shotguns which were in the cars.  I only fired them a couple of time in practise, when you get that pump, action going and if you just had a mass of targets  I can understand how one could do a lot of damage. Of course I know no one there,  but even someone as big and hard as f...k as I, have the capability of feeling the hurt, shock, and terrible sadness imposed upon the poor shocked parents family and friends of those lost, I have never dealt with losses in these numbers, but have dealt with enough to know that many lives will change today. Not for the better.

Someone suggested it but no-one did it.

Feel free tbh.

Allegedly two shooters.

Yes, I lived there. This sort of shit is one of the main reasons I don’t any more. Santa Fe is a town southeast of Houston on the way to Galveston. Part of the Houston metro area, basically.

A short little piece on CNN said there was an incident at the school a couple of months ago when firecrackers were set off in the corridores, apparently to see how long it would take police to attend an incident.

Another suspect in custody but no reason why, there is also some comment about objects found which could be pipe bombs, but as happens all sorts of stories coming out just now, very few confirmed though as fact.

This is the third school shooting in eight days, and the 22nd since the beginning of the year in the United States.

what a terrible waste of life and still the gun lobby won’t see it

From the evening standard.

"It is the worst mass shooting in America since February, when 17 people were gunned down at a high school in Parkland, Florida"

Part of me wants to laugh at that fact but the other part just finds it too sad and frankly too shocking that they can even make that statement.

hearing about kids being slaughtered at school every month is the kind of thing you expect from a war torn / developing country,

the fact its being allowed to happen time and time again in the U.S honestly blows my mind, i cant wrap my head around how people keep seeing it happen but refuse to do anything about it.

This will happen again and again and again, until such time as the majority of the American public realise that their children are more important than any of this 2nd amendment rights crap.

Every person who votes for congress/senators who are in the pocket of the NRA are complicit in these massacres, everyone of these lawmakers who have blood on their hands need removed from office, including G.I. Bone Spurs.

The power lays with the American people, only they can vote out the corrupt lawmakers and elect people who actually care more about protecting their children rather than filling their own pockets with blood soaked dollar bills.

America wake the f~ck up before you don't have any kids left to kill.

Every time I see these reports I am so saddened. This one has hit home as a good friend of mine lives in Houston.

In my opinion nobody needs an automatic or semi automatic weapon. Nobody.

Agree totally with your sentiments, just heard a reporter state that the weapon used were a one shot shotgun, and an older model revolver. The weapons were owned by the shooters father.  I thought it was at least a pump action shotgun, so I am not sure this description of the weapons is correct, ten people shot dead and ten others wounded so there had to be some reloading, that makes the number of injured seem high. The revolver itself would require , replacing six rounds in the cylinder which is relatively time consuming, unless using a speed load, and a new round each time the shotgun is fired same thing, so doesn't seem right to me either.

And several thousand miles away (but literally in the same media breath) we’re being force fed ****ing royal weddings.  Aye, let’s just block out the evil reality of the world to get our wee flags out and continue to worship a tradition that should have died hundreds of years ago.

Makes me sick, rant over.

Not a million miles away from where i'm sitting right now. Unfortunately America as a whole has no desire to do anything that can stop, or at least minimize, this type of thing.

Also unfortunately, and what may make things worse in future, is that the minority NRA/2A blinkered supporters are still using things like this as an excuse to pedal their cause. See the 22 year old girl who walked back into her university the following day after her graduation to take some pictures wearing an assault rifle to make 'her point'. When people are brainwashed at that age, there really is no hope of meaningful change.

Sitting at lunch with a few of my colleagues as the news broke. One of them (American) stated, "even if something on the level of 9/11 happened with guns it wouldn't change anything here". And that folks is all you need to know.

This. The end.

But in a few weeks time, you or I will be posting similar shit.

It will never end. America just accepts it.

I wonder what it is about American society than makes so many young students so angry/unstable.

Still, that is another discussion, but what if no matter how angry/unstable they were, they couldn't lay hands on a gun:

Wonder if it’s FIFA rage as seems a bit odd to target this type of event? Or perhaps an incel (sp*) has lost it! Fearing the worst though as I would imagine it is young people who attend these sorts of events!

Probably a case of some weirdo coward picking it as an easy target - lots of young people and low level security.
