SectionDJambo
There’s plenty being said by some that Brexit hasn’t hurt the UK. Our current problems are just from Covid and bad planning from haulage companies. We left the EU to improve our lot, after promises of how nations would be banging on our door to make trade deals that we weren’t allowed to whilst within the EU. We would save billions of £s to spend on services in the UK. Apart from Rees Mogg now saying that it may be 50 years before we see the benefits, has anyone else given us a wee timeline of when we can say that Brexit has actually improved our standard of living and quality of life? I appreciate that the EU wasn’t a perfect club to be in, but it was a huge trading market to be in. It would be nice to see some positive change to our lives, as we were promised, now that we have left the club that we were told was holding us back. Ulysses
How do they come up with numbers to say that the UK has 76,000 too few HGV drivers? Are there 76,000 trucks sitting there empty because nobody is available to drive them? I went looking at different statistical reports, and saw some stats that intrigued me, and in some cases that didn't make sense. There are around 500,000 licensed HGVs in the UK, but only 323,000 drivers employed. If the UK suddenly found 76,000 drivers, there would still be 100,000 more HGVs than drivers. Why's that? Do half of the UK's HGV drivers really earn less than £12 an hour? The official stats say that this is the case. JudyJudyJudy
Great statement from the bakers union regarding Labour . Says it all The Bakers’ Union (BFAWU) has announced today that it has decided to disaffiliate from Labour during its annual party conference, accusing Keir Starmer of waging a “factional internal war” instead of focusing on “real change”. ................................................................................. In a statement, the union said: “We have a real crisis in the country and instead of leadership, the party’s leader chooses to divide the trade unions and the membership by proposing changes to the way elections for his successor will take place. “We don’t see that as a political party with any expectations of winning an election. It’s just the leader trying to secure the right wing faction’s chosen successor.” Below is the full statement. The decision taken by delegates who predominantly live in what’s regarded as Labour red wall seats shows how far the Labour Party has travelled away from the aims and hopes of working class organisations like ours. The decision by the party to not engage with a union that levied its poorly paid members in 1902 to build a party that would bring about real change to their lives, is the culmination of a failure to deliver those changes during our 119 year relationship. In 1902 we had thousands being fed by the king, while today the poor must feed themselves. We need footballers to campaign to ensure our schoolchildren get a hot meal. Workers in our sector, who keep the nation fed, are relying on charity and good will from family and friends to put food on their tables. They rely on help to feed their families, with 7.5% relying on food banks, according to our recent survey. But instead of concentrating on these issues we have a factional internal war led by the leadership. We have a real crisis in the country and instead of leadership, the party’s leader chooses to divide the trade unions and the membership by proposing changes to the way elections for his successor will take place. We don’t see that as a political party with any expectations of winning an election. It’s just the leader trying to secure the right-wing faction’s chosen successor. The decision taken by our delegates doesn’t mean we are leaving the political scene, it means we will become more political and we will ensure our members’ political voice is heard as we did when we started the campaign for £10 per hour in 2014. Today we want to see £15 per hour for all workers, the abolition of zero hours contracts and ending discrimination of young people by dispensing with youth rates. The BFAWU will not be bullied by bosses or politicians. When you pick on one of us you take on all of us. That’s what solidarity means. There could be a multitude of reasons, it all depends on who leaked it and what their motive was if they had a motive, it could have been anything from political to embarrass and put more presure on the government, could have been all about money by bumping up sales, could even have been a ploy to try and get cheap labour from the EU again even just for a short while, or it might even have been plain old stupidity or naivety in not thinking that by going to the media there would be the panic that followed. The public are responding to what was reported in the media, as you say yourself there has been fuel shortages for months but until last week and it was reported in the media, very few people had even noticed and nobody was panic buying. Food shortages, I've not seen row upon row of empty shelves, the kind that has been reported and is often shown in the media, I have however, seen since around June in my local co-op, being short of this produce or that produce and the next day or two later being short of other things but then having plenty of what they were short off the day or so before, the shops in the larger towns of Galashiels I have not seen any major shortages, sure a line might be empty but usually there are other brands to choose from and no panic buying, not that I've seen. Will be in Gala tomorrow for our monthly shop, so will be able to see if anything has changed since last month, will also be the first time needing fuel since all this broke last week, so will see what the score is with fuel as well. The shadow home secretary when asked what labour would do, the reply was 'we'd ask industry what they needed', he then criticized the 5000 visas for HGV drivers as not enough, but when asked how many labour would have the reply was again ' we'd ask industry'. This is not the kind of leadership people want to see in the opposition, effectively it's we don't know what to do so we'd ask somebody else. Whereas, what I think the public want to see is something like this. We'd have 20,000 HGV visa's for 18 months, prioritze HGV licence applications at DVLA, we would work on these 24/7, then longer term we would then look at why so many drivers are leaving the industry and why we can't attract new drivers, what needs to be done to make people see that driving an HGV is a good career choice and encourage drivers back into the industry. I think it's certainly a lot better than basically saying we'd ask somebody else what to do. I sometimes wonder if labour really want to get back into government again, the worst tory government is goodness knows how long and labour still can't lay a glove on them and still trail them in the polls. I think the Owen Jones brigade secretly prefer being able to shout about their policies without ever having to deliver them.
