Seriously though, short of torching our local Shell office, what weapons do the general public have at their disposal? The level of profiteering going on is practically robbery. It's just another transfer of wealth from the poor to the better off.

Only 5% of the shell profit worldwide figure relates to UK

Start jailing energy executives with excessive retained profits that will bring prices down

The only weapon is our vote. Unfortunately we don’t get to use that often enough to make an immediate difference.

I don’t mind businesses making money and not fan out of windfall tax but looking like the only way to get something back.

Not a lot, change suppliers if you can find a cheaper tariff elsewhere & try and make energy savings on your own amount of energy usage, simply put, the lower your bill = the less amount of profit they make from you, I think that's the only real options open to most people.

By the way your energy bill is going up 40% in April.

But we can’t impose a windfall tax on them, or they’ll be forced to cut jobs!

Poor energy firms, running on a shoestring budget so they are…

The people of France took to the streets to protest a 2 year increase to the pension age, meanwhile saddos in this country see it as some kind of badge of honour when their quality of life is decimated just so businesses can generate record profits…

Fair brought a tear to my eye knowing I've been part of contributing to some corporation making record profits. I can't find the words to describe such a colossal achievement.

"We can't tax them, they'll stop investing in Britain"

:getout:

UK government: You’re making an awful lot of profit right now, and the customers who are funding it are struggling live. We’re going to take some of those profits.

Oil & gas company: Do that and we’ll cut jobs. Besides, we’re going to invest those profits back into our business.

UK government: Will that benefit the customers by lowering their bills?

Oil & gas company has left the chat

How about we nationalise them and use half the profits to lower the prices at the pumps and the other half to give public sector workers a pay rise?

Big business is ripping the absolute pish out of the Uk.

Someone will be along shortly to tell you that’s the most backwards, inconceivably mental and disastrous idea that anyone has ever thought of, ever.

How will the private shareholders cope eh? Did you even consider them at all?

Much better to stick with what we’ve got and let the private companies run riot unchallenged. That’ll serve us better in the long run, apparently.

Which itself is absolute bollocks.

There are many, many thousands of subsidies and tax breaks available for various different types of business. Around £80 billion a year, on average, depending on what's offered and how many apply.

The UK is not a free market economy.

They just pretend it is.

And I include housing benefit in that. That's your taxes being given straight to landlords, so they can keep their rents nice and high. That's another £23.4 billion a year.

A lot of these profits is paid out in dividends to 'the shareholders'.  A lot of the share holdings is owned by the pension funds.

Guess who tends to have pension policies with the pension funds that are performing on steroids due to excess,  unexpected,  unearned,  fixed & fiddled global marketplace derived profits... and who tends to not afford to have such pensions.

If only we had the option to elect a government who might enact some new legislation and regulations to force a code of conduct on predatory parasites.  All underpinned by the threat of financial and criminal penalties.

It's what happens when you allow private enterprises to operate,  red in tooth and claw in the jungle,  without keeping an eye on them and telling them what is and isn't acceptable.

What do you suggest? Hanging the crooked b******s?

Maybe if the junta called an election we could vote them out and bring in an administration that isn't just in it for the elite. Looks like they will hang on as long as they can and wreak maximum damage to the cou try.

Not allowed nowadays, however I can remember the days when the sheriff's held warrant sales in people's houses and gardens, brutal back in those days, guess England will catch up with Scotland eventually and ban the dreconian practices which take place there.

Right,  you're poor.  Off to prison with you.  You'll need to pay for your keep though.  You'll need to sign away your state pension or your organs.

I watched it happen to a neighbour's house about 3 years ago, they picked the lock, changed the meter, and locked the door behind them when they left.

That’s a surprise . I’m positive that debt collectors can’t enter houses though in Scotland .

Might be usual for some Octopus are allowing new customers to sign up to their tracker tariff. This tariff tracks the wholesale price so can be a lot cheaper than standard tariffs many of us are on. You need to switch from your current supplier first then switch to the tracker tariff once switch over.

You need to keep an eye on it though as obviously wholesale prices go up as well as down. It’s a lot cheaper at the moment though for those on standard tariffs.

You need a smart meter to get this tariff.

Flexible is their standard tariff. The one Dazo mentioned is called Agile.

It happened to me about 10 years ago, maybe a bit longer.

I was working but struggling badly with my mental health and finances, those crooks did that to me.

The prepayment metre caused a fortune as well, even though it was also collecting the debt, it seemed to just eat cash.

I spent many days and nights without any power in my old flat

That’s sounds like hell.

It was obviously a luxury for you.

It’s certainly a luxury for a lot of people now.

Fortunately I’ve never been in that position.

It really was a dark time for me (no pun intended).

Freezing cold showers in the morning, with literally nothing else. No TV, no phone, no cooking appliances, no light in the evening.

Thankfully those days are behind me, but those prepayment metres are horrific and shouldn't be allowed.

It's one of the reasons I really find it hard not to respond to people who regularly blame the poor, mentally ill and disabled for the horrible situation many find themselves in.
