To me it often comes down to attitude from the player, if the player comes with belief in their talent but awareness that they have to work hard as the league is harder some think then they should do well. If they come with the belief that they are too good for the league so it will be easy then they fail (as we have seen happen to soo many players, young and old, who then go to the English press after they fail saying it because Scottish football is a terrible standard.)
