There is no guarantee that signing a Scottish player over a foreigner will prove to be more successful but I think we have been burned too many times the last 5 years.

Hopefully Savage,Lancefield and Brown will mean that the days of Martin and Damour like signings are confined to history.

I have no doubt that there will be some pleasant surprises the next 3 weeks.

Aye but what about the Callachan, Wighton and Steven Maclean type signings. Findlay could be one of them.

I couldn’t give a toss if a guy is any nationality from Albanian to Zimbabwean as long as he’s got good performances in him and the mentality to play in front of 20,000 every week.

And that’s why I have doubts about Findlay. You look at young Beni and ask, can we find a 6”2 CB version of him? It’s about the type of player. A player like that would be a hero at a club like this. Easier said than done but there’s a lot of different types of player out there in these world leagues.

One thing I like about Robbie is, he played with basically all the very best foreign signings at Hearts. The Rudi, Takis, Zal, Karipidis, Aguiar so many of them team mates of Robbie over many years. Even going back to the Ricardo Fullers and MDVs Neilson was in those squads. He also played with Nade, Obua, Witteveen, Beniusis.  As a head coach under Levein as DoF he has seen some pretty good signings of foreigners like Sow, Rossi etc. And been stung by Oshaniwa, Rherras etc. So actually Robbie is probably one of the best qualified guys on the planet to know what is a good foreign signing for the SPFL vs what is maybe not so good. He certainly knows how badly it can go wrong but in terms of foreign market I think we will see Robbie go back into it. For me another Rossi would be the ideal blueprint of what we need if I could pick any player to replace an outgoing Soapy. Not out of the question Findlay could happen to be the man we are going to need, just saying there’s a whole world of players out there, being Scottish doesn’t matter a jot to whether Findlay is the right player

Popescu as "emergency cover"...

He ****ing causes the emergencies.

We've sign a rb, so Smith can move to centre defence. Far better than getting players like Popescu in.

We really don't need to panic when Souttar leaves.

This will be exactly what we do if he goes

One things for certain.. Souttar would only be allowed to leave this window IF we bring in an able replacement. Otherwise I don't imagine he'll be moving until the summer.

Absolutely

Neilson has been quoted on a few occasions that his preference is for Souttar to see out the remainder of his contract and that it would take ‘big’ money should he be wanted in January

Whether it is truthfully what Neilson wants or whether it’s a financial motive we’ll probably never know.

Souttar may hold all the cards come the end of the season but currently Hearts are still in a good place with regards to how this works out.

Smith or Moore " are able" replacements.

The signing of the new rwb has freed up  both Moore and Smith from that position.

If Souttar leaves and we sign no other defender we will be in the same position as we have been all season.

I can't see us getting a match fit, Souttar type defender who will slot right into the team and adjust to Scottish football instantly.

I'd be happy with Findlay and our defensive options if he signed.

I think at least 1 new forward is more important.

Well we got Beni. We got Devlin. They both hit the ground running. Hopefully Atkinson is in that mould. And who’s to say we can’t find another signing like that at CB? The main doubt about Findlay, what type of shape is he in, what’s his state of readiness, he has not played anything near what we will be playing even against Talbot. And on the American diet he may be in worse shape than Vanacek. He has been playing reserve team soccer.

But from the noise it does now sound like we are in strongly for him so

hopefully those concerns are not shared by our management, they will have seen up to date footage of him. If Findlay is the man then in Robbie / Savage we must trust.

The purpose of a transfer window is to come out of it stronger than you went in. If we lose Souttar and don’t replace him we are weaker. Might be temporary and we might get away with it, but we’re weaker (in that area). I don’t know what’s so difficult to grasp about that

But also Souttar is a very, very good player.  You lose a guy like that, you're 99% sure to be weaker come the end fo the window (especially in Jan).

You could argue that as a team, we'll be stronger.  Both Moore and, for me especially, Smith are good RCB and our problem position all season imo has been RWB.  If Natty Dred is as good as reports, we're replacing Souttar with someone very able and replacing our RWB options with a specialist.  We may well be a better overall team for it.

If we also sign a decent CF to vie for a place and give us more options, you could again say the squad is actually stronger.

Signing a straight replacement for Souttar who is better than him isn't overly possible or certainly isn't easy.  It isn't, either, the only way we can improve once he leaves.

This is where I’m at, not that it matters,  Shankland, Findlay,  I don’t know if they are good enough or not but,  we employ people to make those decision for us.  Let’s trust in them.

As for Souttar, he is ours until the summer and we should treat him as such,  like a used car,  if we can get a good price for him now snap it up, if not, run it into the ground, if it breaks down then nothing lost,  harsh I know but that’s the position Soapy and his agent have placed us.

According to transfermarkt he done a hammy in May 2021 and has played twice since the last time being September 16th. Doesn’t say if he’s played any reserve football since but that doesn’t seem like a guy ready to play a derby in 3 weeks

Don't know anything about Findlay at all, don't recall how well he played for Kilmarnock when there. But there again hadn't really heard anything about Andy Webster when he originally arrived from Arbroath nor John Souttar before he arrived from Dundee United. If Findlay can do as well as both of those players did for HMFC then there will be no complaints.

Wouldn’t think transfermarkt keeps tabs on reserves appearances outside the top top leagues. And tbh I don’t even know what reserves football looks like in the US. But I am imagining extremely slow paced kickabouts against local Philadelphia college teams and suchlike at a dreadful standard. At best.

As I say maybe as a long term project but in terms of someone to come in right now and start, I would have a hard time seeing Findlay as that player. But maybe we do have enough there in Moore Halkett Smith Kingsley and Cochrane to cover CB while he gets up to speed which may take 6 months plus.

People turning their noses up at Findlay is mental he was immense at Killie when they got 3rd, granted he took a gamble and went to the MLS didn't work out for any number of reasons but a guy that knows the league and can slot into our starting 11 seems a no brainer to me.

If we sign Findlay i will be happy with that, Aggresive centre half who is good in the air and has a bit of pace aswell. It would allow us to move Kingsley back out to left wing back where he offers more than Cochrane in an attacking sense. Add Atkinson on the right side and we will be stronger going forward down both sides for sure.

A back three of Findlay, Halkett, and Moore would also give us much more height and to have players like Smith and Cochrane on the bench would allow us good cover and options to change formation and make changes more easily, especially with Smith's versatilty.

It’s not mental. It’s simply pointing out that a player playing decent under one manager (Steve Clarke) and not playing well since that manager left, to the point was being left out the Kilmarnock first XI before being transferred to the MLS where they sit in the bench most weeks when an English guy that decided to play ‘soccer’ while going to College in the States starts ahead of him, may not be the world beater some suggest he is.

People are right to have reservations based on current and most recent form. Bates looked promising at Rangers once, but his performances for Hamburg and Aberdeen since show he’s not very good. Just because someone was good once doesn’t mean they still are. I’m not saying he’d not be a good signing, he may very well turn out to be - and if he signs I damn well hope he does - but it’s in no way shape or form “mental” to question him as a signing.

I'll be honest, I'm quite bad for only watching Hearts (and Scotland) so only see players when they play us...

Findlay, I remmeber him talking about himself when we were linked but he went to US.  Tall, quick, athletic, aggressive but reckons he can play a bit, that about right??  Remember him saying he liked the idea of Philly as they play a lot of football and a high line which suits him cos he's fast and good on the ball...

I mean, I played with tall, fast, athletic good players at amateur, so it's all about levels of course, but would you say that describes the "type" of player he is??

Would you have taken him before his MLS stint when we were rumoured this time last year?

You can go back and check my posts on the subject, no I wouldn’t. Because after Clarke left he in effect capitulated. He seems to be a player who has potential but needs the right man manager to get it out of him. As much as I respect Neilson for our current league position, he’s certainly not in the Steve Clarke man manager mould. If we’d be assured the player under Clarke I’d take him, but we won’t be and in my opinion we’ll get a player not as good.

He is quiet like what you describe to be honest but he is someone that I think we are missing a big CH that can header the ball 30 yards in the other direction and get us up the pitch, Halkett is okay at doing this but not as good as Findlay. He is also left sided something we did want before trying Kingsley out there and it has worked but as has been stated on this thread already it means we can move Kingsley to LWB where i think he offers more in attacking than Cochrane.

Yes but 12 months ago we were in the championship playing Popescu, a half fit looking Halkett, Berra and Souttar could’ve gone either way on return from injury.

We are now 3rd in the Premiership with a strong budget having offloaded expensive dross like Berra, and can attract players who want to play European football next season. And potentially a cash windfall from Souttar sale. We are talking about spending big here to replace one of our best players this season. And keep us on track for 3rd. People are quite right to doubt if a guy who’s not kicked a ball in a year and can’t get a game in the MLS is going to be the level we need.

Pretty much in a nutshell mate, he is clearly not had a great time in the States nor is he going to be the next Sergio Ramos but he is proven in our league and probably feels he has a point to prove after his bad time over the water.

No one knows if he will be a good signing or not but IMO i think he would really add to our squad. He is at a goiod age aswell.

Disappointed we didn't get a decent fee for Soapy to be honest but wouldnt say i am that sad to see him go. I honestly think we can get a there or there abouts ability wise replacement without much hassle. Hopefully a player that doesn't have a horrific injury track record too.

Pretty excited to see who we are working on bringing in. Really hope the new Aussie lad is a carbon copy of Cammy.

It feels like Savage has done a better job in 12 months than what Murray did in 12 years.

He wasn't left out by Killie, he got injured just as they started to plummet down the table.

I do have reservations about him, though, because "was great in that Killie team that finished 3rd" applies to a lot of players who now perform averagely for average teams (e.g. Brophy, O'Donnell).

Even if this is the case, his form dipped substantially after Clarke left (along with the team as a whole of course). He was also crap under McCulloch and Lee Clark.

People still falling for newspaper click bait saying we’re after players.

If a paper reports we’re after a player before a deal is agreed then I’m inclined to think it’s bullshit.

Joe Savage is serious when he says no leaks. If agents starts leaking shit I’m sure he’d walk away from a player if we were in fact interested. Breakdown in trust and commitment to Hearts as it sets us up for a “bidding war” which is exactly what he wants to avoid.

Players we sign are either properly committed to joining us or we don’t sign them. He has made this clear. Otherwise they can “jog on” as he himself has said.

In combination with the new recruitment team he is definitely making better choices and should be given credit for that.

Apologies if this article has already been posted but it’s an interesting read.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.footballscotland.co.uk/scots-abroad/stuart-findlay-special-mls-play-22559405.amp

By the looks of it, his now wife doesn’t have a visa for the USA and is back here in Scotland. That’ll be why he is linked with clubs(through his agent) or he’s back here for his recent wedding and it’s an easy piece for a journo to put 2+2 together given we were interested previously and losing Souttar.

He has another interesting comment in that he doesn’t want to leave the MLS without ‘proving himself’.

FWIW, I’d take him given the fact we are currently going into next season with 0/3 of our 3 centre back starters contracted for next season and 99.9% certain to lose 1 of them.

Correct. 👍 The way it should be, even if we have to wave goodbye to someone we were interested in.     The transfer gossip  guff in the papers is beyond ridiculous - Rangers & Celtic each "ready to swoop" for  over a dozen players  this window.

Was merely pointing out that Findlay is left footed so doesn't directly replace Soapy.  I've not banged on about a left sided CB - I think Kingsley is brilliant there.  What you've done is mistake me for many on here, where in fact, I'm just me.

I wasn't moaning!

Fact if if we bring in Findlay, keep Halkett and Kingsley, with Moore and Smith, Cochrane, Natty Dred and even Haring, our defensive options are superb.  Be interesting what our "best" 3/5 would be.

That's why I said 'many' not 'you' .

I agree post Souttar and with , possibly , Findlay we will have great defensive options

It’s a good article thanks for that, he seems like a determined and ambitious individual who wants to prove himself in the US, in England and for Scotland. It doesn’t sound like playing in our league again is part of the plans, which is one reason he left last year.

Soapy officially away?

Not seeing this anywhere.

No but will more than likely be away either sometime this month or at the end of the season.

Hopefully. 500k or something like that would be a good deal considering its £0 in the summer.

Just a bit of an annoying situation as we really should be getting 2mil+ when you consider what players like Scott McKenna went for.

Anyway - on to the next one. Confident we can find a decent replacement!

If it is a player he wants he isn't just going to walk away because an agent chats to a tabloid imo. I do agree that Findlay is probably just guesswork but we were interested before and need a CB so might end up being right.

He will. He has said as much. We start getting played by agents he will move on to another target.

What surprises me is , given the state of their defence is that Celtic aren’t in for Soapy. He’s better than any of their defenders IMHO.

Totally agree. He would start for them without a doubt. Not too sure about the Rangers though.
