I didn't expect to be waking up and watching the final set live! The TV studio team had all effed off to bed leaving Marcus Buckland on his own to wrap up. At least we didn't have to listen to Tim y'know Henman but, on the flip side, there was no Annabel Knightley to cheer up my morning.

 

Tiafoe got his wish (as stated in his post-match interview) that the Sinner v Alcaraz match would be long and late! 5:15 on the match clock is amazing but a 3am finish time doesn't do the players any favours. Carlito is maybe young, fit and vibrant enough to make a game of it on Friday but there's no doubt that Tiafoe is going in with a massive advantage. Logic would say that it should be the second semi-final scheduled so there's every chance that Alcaraz will have played three successive matches going into the wee small hours. With the American crowd getting behind their home-grown favourite, I fear the dice are slightly loaded.

Its scheduled for 8 pm.  It was ludicrous that the match started so late. What the hell is that about ? I assume is due to television coverage for the East of the USA too ?  I woke up and like you was surprised it was still on.  Looked a great match. I like Carlos.  Been some criticism on Twitter that hes arrogant and cocky.  I cant see it. I just see a confident young guy having the time of his life.   The future of tennis is looking good if there is a Sinner / Alcatraz rivalry. Plus some of the other young guns.

Unlike Wimbledon, where your ticket on centre court gets you your seat for the day, Flushing Meadows show courts are sold in two sessions, afternoon and evening. After the afternoon session, they empty the stadium before letting folk with evening tix in (although it's possible to hide in the bogs between sessions). The earliest that the first evening match starts will be about 7.15. Even if its a shocker of a bursds match, the second match won't start before about 8:30/45.

 

By my reckoning, Ashe was lying empty for a couple of hours between 5 and 7 last night.  They couldn't introduce flexibility to start the evening session earlier as it's tailored to catching the post- work crowd. If Pegula had forced a deciding set, they'd have still motored on with the chaps after it. Mental to think that they might have been playing at that standard at 4 in the morning.

I know it’s crazy . Amazing crowd and New York is just wonderful ! I loved it when I visited . “ it was more than the movies “ as the old queen Quentin Crisp declared when he emigrated there in 1981 . Think he was 72 or something !

I’ll be watching the Tiafoe v Alcaraz . Should be a good battle . Happy if either way , though Frances back story is inspiring so would be a great achievement if he won the whole thing .

Apparently tickets for the Sabalenka v Swistek match were as low as $30 . Not a lot of interest . No wonder , some of the ladies singles are over in under an hour whereas the mens are epics !

I've royally ****ed my predictions on the men's side, constantly backing Ruud to fall. 

 

Looked like Carlos was going to win this comfortably at one stage but good to see Ruud likely pick up this second set. Still think Alcaraz wins though.

Can only be a good thing. More champions the better. Great as they were/are it can get a bit boring when ND, RN and RF won it . Andy and Stan were great when they throw a spanner in the works of the Tennis Triad.

It took those guys years to develop that aura though. By the age of 19 i think only Rafa had won anything.

 

Medvedev will be all over Alcraz and the likes of Ruud, Zverev and Novak obviously will be targeting him as well.

The two doubles specialists in the team are both ranked higher than Jamie Murray, and have both won Grand Slam doubles recently too.

We went along yesterday and it was a really good day/night.

 

Really good atmosphere and the energy levels were maintained til the very end. And just so good to be able to watch tennis of that quality up close.

 

Dav Evans played well and was unlucky to lose a tight match.

Cam Norrie started off playing like he had never held a racket but the way he fought back to win was THE highlight of the event for me.

A pleasure to see Andy Murray, although in the doubles. Again, that tie could have gone either way.

 

Got home at 2am. Utterly bizarre concept to have a tie starting at 10.30pm.

I am going to suggest it came down to money. Huge excitement around the arena when Andy appeared and it would not have gone down well had he been overlooked, having been listed as a team member.

My thought, like Nookie's, is that Leon Smith was afraid to drop Andy in front of a home crowd. I'd have been interested to see how Skupski and Salisbury fared against Ram (#2) and Sock (no slouch in doubles who's won a handful of slams). Andy Murray is a more than capable doubles player and if either of our top two were injured, I think I'd rather see him in the team than Glasspool or other jobbing doubles specialists. It made no sense to send him in against the Yanks. In fact, I'd say it was poor captaincy to leave out a top 3 ranked doubles specialist who is leading the points race to the tour finals.

 

Jamie's on the slide but If either Skupski or Salisbury were unavailable, I'd rather have used his experience for this tie.
