Mortality rate is 8.6% so they just said on Sky News.

This is day 11 of the national lockdown and it's the worse day yet.

On day 12 China seen their totals begin to decrease.

As much as I'd like to see the same happen in Italy, I just can't see it.

Don't think we can start calculating mortality rates yet as we don't know how many infected and recovered from mild symptoms, so that 8.6% is a scary figure and implies millions on the horizon.

Really hope we see Italy peak this weekend and it gives us some optimism we can fight this while we await remedies and ultimately vaccination.

Huge jump in cases though, 4500+ in 1 day even with very good health systems if there end up been massive amount of cases in short period it will break them.

Is it because the Spanish and Italians socialise with older family members more than other countries?

Maybe not, heard them say on the news that Germany records their deaths differently, but it didn't say in what way.

Aye that total today is scary and can see now why Merkel made that statement last night.

Could it be to do with testing as well? Our ratio of infected to deaths is going to look much worse than reality because thousands of people have had it and have not been recorded.

They had to do this and on this scale.

I've been calling for it for well over a week.

Everybody knew it had to be done but they resisted and farted about and wasted a fortnight during which time the virus has openly spread in the general population due to their gobshite "herd immunity" policy and tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs.

They are to be lauded for finally doing what needed to be done but they should also be criticised to wasting a fornight when they could have done it right away.

I don’t think that the way these nationalities (Spain, Italy, France) greet each other, can help.

Handshakes, multiple kissing etc.

Can't help, poor buggers wouldn't know who had it or how dangerous to the ill and elderly 😟

Regarding the advances in treatments with existing drugs and anti-virals (or combinations).    Some people seem to think the various research projects are showing promising data.    I wonder if these interventions can be fine tuned to roll out a system of early intervention before hospitalisation or perhaps as soon as hospitalisation occurs.

From Lancashire Police.

"I am sure that everyone is aware of the current issue of COVID-19 and the advice of social distancing. However, we are currently responding to the issue of around 130 children aged between 14-18 all gathered in Williamson Park Lancaster. Some of these children are under the influence of alcohol. This is a call to all parents with kids of this age group that are currently not at home, if they are not at home, where are they ?  If they are at the park we suggest you exercise your parental responsibility and get them home sharpish. There are businesses having to shut their doors to prevent this issue yet your kids are behaving like this !! Help us out please."

This is about 40 minutes from where I live, what the **** are parents thinking about?!

Very much doubt the parents care. Most of them will be proud of kids and think it is hilarious. Lock the ****ers up.

Wouldn't be surprised that some of the parents are at the pub getting their last pints before they close.

I reckon that's what Boris is praying for with his 12 week comments. Got to hope that someone strikes jackpot. As China is reporting no new cases, wonder if they have something and are keeping quiet. Wouldn't think so but can you trust Chinese government.

It would be a potential game changer if they can treat out a large percentage of the ICU cases before their condition gets to a certain stage.     Even better would be the possibility to self administer away from hospital but that seems a bit too hopeful.

Antibody testing to the degree of multiple self testing would be another game changer but they also need to research on the matter of re-infection / active transmission after recovery.    That's a vital piece in the jigsaw.

These twats deserve the loss of their pub visiting.    The next thing will be a rise in the use of house based gatherings to substitute for lost pub nights.    Old fashioned house parties for arseholes.

Everything they should have done two or three weeks ago.

Proper lockdowns.

Wage guarantees.

Universal credit expansion.

Shame it's waken so bloody long for reality to bite and for central government to act.

How many people have been infected that could have been prevented if they'd done all this in the first place?

How many people have already lost their jobs before these measures were put in place?

I don't think Boris is running the country. I think it is Sunak and the devolved Govts, namely Sturgeon...Every decision that the Govt has made this week has either been by the Chancellor or pre-empted by the devolved Govts. Boris is now just a bumbling mouthpiece.

Just the bit in bold. They are very very tough negotiators. In a previous life I worked for S&N then Heineken.

Johnson is a devolver of workload.    That was his plan as PM from the outset.    He's probably happy to take a chair position in Cobra / other meetings and the real work away from the meetings will be done with very little input from him.    When No10 has to lead it will be mostly Cummings.

Agreed. I also suspect that Cummings is the one behind the "herd immunity" idea. They've looked at Netherlands adopting this because they have highest density of population and multiple open borders and gone "meh, London is like that" so they chose that as the UK's policy. It was a PR disaster when they tried to sell it to the populace on Monday and as the week has progressed Boris has tried to stick to it but clearly others have forced him to clamp down more and more every day. Sunak has clearly made his own calls on economy and Scotland led with Wales and NI quickly following on school closures forcing England to do the same...Today was media driven.
