It appears that the death rate in Scotland is around double the UK death rate and has been for some time. It would seem that the Scottish Government is not being challenged in this. Why?

Cases were much higher in Scotland a month ago and deaths follow a few weeks later. Cases much higher in rUK now so would expect death figures to climb in a few weeks.

England is doing okay just now with it imo given there's almost no restrictions. By design? I doubt it. By sheer luck? That's what I'd bet on!

UK nation with some restrictions - case rates down by 60% over the last 5 weeks

UK nation without restrictions - case rates up by 60% over the same 5 weeks

See, it's dead easy to find some stat that proves/disproves arguments or perceptions. There are explanations for most figures, but probably not worth arguing about.

Looking at the current UK figures, week on week Cases are up 13.8%, Hospitalisations are up 6.9%,  Deaths are up 5.4%.  While individual nations may have their ups and downs, in my opinion the UK's vaccination levels are probably about 3%-5% below the threshold where those numbers would be suppressed considerably.

Scotland's death rate and hospital numbers remain disappointingly higher that rUK. I don't know the reason why, but at least deaths have plateaued over the last month, while cases and hospitalisations have fallen, Let's hope the death figures eventually catch up with the case and hospitalisation trends

Cases have been higher in England for a month now but deaths haven't followed.

Most of the infections are in school years 7-11, so maybe that's why

Don't disagree. I was only pointing out that bashing England based on UK numbers when nations who still have restrictions have higher hospitalisations per 100k makes no sense within itself.

We're hopefully very much on the home straight and the extra vaccinations you think we need happen soon! 👍

My numbers are actually meaningless, as my point was more about being able to pick out stats that support/rebut/refute an argument without the full context behind those figures, i.e. I could offer an opinion why Scotland and England have gone in different directions in recent weeks, such as vaccination rates or schools returning.

In general, it's always better to look at larger data blocks than make arguments out of who is up or down up/down this week.  Making arguments on a limited basis is often political or just point scoring.

In addition to the daily dose 1/2 figures, it appears that the "booster" programme is making good progress.  The cumulative "booster" figures only started being reported in the middle of last week.  The current total is running at 301,878.  The last three days numbers were 20,768, 21,161, and 19,493.

I assume that the booster numbers are a combination of front line health care staff, care home residents and the elderly.

Had my first dose of rage over all this today.. Was at The Vue at Ocean Terminal and as I got out car to go in I realised I had forgotten my mask.. Went in and approached the concession stand to get some food with the family.. The guy asks if I had a mask and I told him I had forgotten it, he then says he can’t serve me, despite others being served at other tellers without masks.. I told him to open his eyes and look about, then to my shame told him to “Eff off” ...

I’m so done with this now..

You should've just said 'exempt' No questions asked.

You know what to do from now on.

If I'm not required to wear one in England then I'll not be doing it up here either

I don’t blame you for losing your cool in that situation.  The mask situation is getting ridiculous.  In Asda today I would say 1 in 3/4 people weren’t wearing a mask whereas three months ago it would have been 1 in 20 that weren’t.

People can see from the numbers that facemasks seem to have very little impact and so are starting to take their own decisions.  The fact that kids still have to wear them all day in school despite multiple images of politician’s and other prominent people gathering indoors without them is shocking.

However because it’s another example of being able to be different from the UK govt the Scottish govt will keep them for the foreseeable unfortunately.

edit:  I am not adverse to having them in public transport for example but the whole hospitality rules, as an example, are very evidently nonsensical.

If it makes you feel comfortable and safe then wear a mask. I do in a lot of situations especially here in Scotland where the weather is changing and the chances of catching Clovis increases.

By the way, no need to post thumbs up while you're away. :) That would be way beyond the call of duty and camaraderie. Have a great time!

For the benefit of quite a few posters on here, Scotland has different rules to England. Also different rules from France/germany/Australia etc etc. If you want to live by the laws of another country then you are free to go and live there. When you live in a country you go by their rules, it really is that simple.

Thanks mate.

The weather forecast is poor so not much walking about but plenty of great pubs.

You probably made the jobsworths day when you said you had forgotten it.

I'd normally feel a bit crap for all the abuse they take but if it was the same moron at Vue Ocean Terminal who, when asking where we wanted seats for Shang-Chi (middle of afternoon midweek so totally dead) and I said anywhere will do, parked us next to the only 2 other people in the cinema. 👏

Course we could move row and did as it was totally empty otherwise, but surely if they are so keen on enforcing the wearing of masks they'd also be vigilant to ensure social distancing where possible?

I shan't hear another peep from anyone bemoaning Westminster's rules on non-devolved issues then...right? Don't like it, go and live somewhere else. Amiright?

Yip, that's why I, and anyone with a bit of common sense, wants out of the shit show that is the uk, via independence. Meanwhile I have to live by the laws of the land so when Scotland sets the laws I live by them, if UK set them I live by them.

Not like you to be wrong, again. And, when I did live in Turkey, I lived by their rules. I didn't whinge and moan and demand to live by Scottish laws

If it makes you feel comfortable and safe then wear a mask. I do in a lot of situations especially here in Scotland where the weather is changing and the chances of catching Clovis increases.

Its better bread.

Which UK rules affect you enough that you bemoan them?

Can't be the Barnett formula windfall that gives YOU an extra £2k+ per annum public spending?

Or the billions that were poured into the furlough scheme?

It wasn't the world leading vaccine scheme was it?

Could it be the millions UK gov want to spend on upgrading Scotland's main arterial road links?

Yeah Scotland got all this for free. Jeff Bezos could save millions on Equipment and fuel by getting a shoodery or cocarry from you.  🚀

If there are laws you don't like in Scotland just move somewhere where you do like them.

I want independence too, but moaning about it is no different to moaning about any other laws...given it was already voted down.

Anyway off topic I guess.
