The evidence isn't universal for masks but it does appear to have shifted in favour as more analysis and real life data available. I have found the Lancet broadly in favour (a heavy going read mind you) but this article I thought was a decent summary of why advice has changed. I think the main thrust is that a mask won't necessarily greatly reduce your chances of getting covid but will reduce significantly the chances of you passing on, if you do. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/06/417906/still-confused-about-masks-heres-science-behind-how-face-masks-prevent
Cade
It's quite simple. Wearing a mask was always a good idea. But when we were in full lockdown and were not mixing with people on a regular basis, their effect would be minimal. Now we're getting back out to work, shops are open and we're mixing in public again, wearing a mask provides an extra layer of safety. That's why mask wearing has gone from "good idea" to "strongly recommended" to "mandatory".

Could this be the way of gaining herd immunity? Concentrate on UK, very positive few days and once PHE England sort out their figures and knock the thousands of deaths labelled as covid off their actual figures, things will start to look better.
