Can I ask FA why the sick and disabled seem to be on your hit list. I know from 20 years in the Employment Service fraud services that Tory govt policies are not driven by social justice. Not even by monitory savings but but social stigma and Daily Mail support.

I am not sure why I should answer your question before you answer mine.

Nothing I have posted suggests sick and disabled people are on "my hit list". In fact I have said the examples of sick and disabled people quoted on the thread are the result of gross inefficiency and waste of money  by the DWP.

And that's understandable too, but telling people they don't understand politics because you got a degree in it 45 years ago is not on.

45 years ago? How old do you think I am?

If you believe that Victorian society had no problems then we need to agree to disagree

I think you need to reflect on the fact that not everyone must answer every question you pose for there to be an effective and constructive debate.   That would suggest you are attempting to control or moderate the debate, not taking part in it.

Nevertheless, I did try to engage with your point by writing "I'm saying that any process needs to be fair and proportionate, and not driven by an inhumane and contemptible dogma".  I think it would be reasonable to infer that this confirms I agree there needs to be a process but for the avoidance of doubt; yes.

The point I am sure you understand is that I believe this simply isn't about process.

I really enjoy those mogg grenfell and boris they look like letter boxes compassionate type comments.  Tories talking about compassion and humanity when they've had two MPs having to say sorry this week and one having to resign.  The all heart party.

Ive been out the country for a week in a place I couldn’t access basically any websites  so just reading the thread.

i don’t know why we bother as the level of toxicity is unbelievable.

Maybe we should try and actually engage in the manifestos and have a debate on policies.

I don’t mind admit I’m have been and will be a future conservative voter.  And before you all start I am  also very disappointed by the current manifestation of the party. However it’s Conservative ideals and their approach to wealth stimulation, defence , their value of the union etc that I believe in and have done for years.  Right now they are doing things I can’t agree with but the fundamental principles I still believe are right in the same way other people will view labour values as being more aligned to their own.

Thats where we should pitch the debate.

i saw a poster announce that NHS funding is at a record level and being told that was “shite”.  It’s not shite is true but that can’t also mean that the NHS is underfunded and struggling.  We have to be able to see the nuances of these issues

That point isn’t intended to start a debate on the NHS more that sometimes facts don’t have to support the popular view that doesn't mean they are shite/wrong/cause for abuse.

another example is that under the current Tory govt the top earning 1% contribute a greater percentage of income tax than under any government in history labour or conservative.  Again that’s a fact, but again that’s doesnt mean more shouldn’t be done on tax avoidance, of course it should are are the Tory’s doing enough, no probably not.  Again, balance and nuance.

My plea is that people stop citing the same old boring and stereotypical things about each party (me included btw) and we try and have a proper discussion on what should be a fascinating month without resorting to abusing each other.

tin hat firmly on!

So in the spirit of practising what I preach I will go first based on the news this morning.

Labour policy on extending maternity from 9-12 months of full pay.  Personally I think 9 months is enough, I don’t hear too many people complaining about our maternity offering in the UK and it will have a negative impact on small business so no from me.

they also want to introduce menopause rights in the workplace- not sure how I feel about that, might get me into trouble so will dodge that one!

SNP want an NHS bill to protect against privatisation.  Can’t say I disagree with the sentiment though feels a bit playing to the crowd.  I’d much rather hear what their plans are to improve the NHS performance now rather than focus on what might happen.

Tories want to make it easier for foreign Workers to come from

NHS, workers from outside EU.  Just seems ridiculous to me, if that’s a concern why not have a brexit deal that would mean we could continue getting good workers from Europe like we do now.  Seems like a policy to mitigate the impact of Brexit.  Safe to say I’m my a fan of that one!

Swinson's bullshit doesn't stand up to this kind of scrutiny.

She would take the lib dems into partnership with the tories in a heartbeat. Just like Clegg.

How the hell did that Swinson become leader anyway? I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more patronising sounding woman open her mouth. I literally can’t stand listening to her.
Where do you learn to speak like that when you’re scottish anyway? You’d have to practice being that annoying.

Day three of the election campaign and I wonder who'll make an inappropriate comment or some other gaff, who'll decide they are not standing as an MP again or who'll be forced to withdraw due to comments they made years ago.

Wonder what the day will bring, and there's still the week-end to look forward to, especially the Sunday morning political shows.

Yep, some awful Tory-like votes there from her that I wouldn't have expected. A sad decline for the Lib Dems from Charles Kennedy was leading them. Shame about his alcohol problems as he seemed like a very decent bloke.

On maternity leave...if you are comfortable financially you don't understand the pressures many people are under. New parents being one.

This is a relatively low cost improvement. Also crucially it's more money for children.

Also more money available to spend in more challenged areas economically is good for local economies. One of the reasons things like benefit freezes have been so damaging for struggling economic areas.

Gonna be a total car crash when she appears on any of the TV debates, she'll get ripped a new one.

Seen Adam Boulton rip her apart during the Lib Dem leadership campaign, when put under pressure by him she got all flustered, started to contradict herself, couldn't justify herself when in the coalition government and voted with the tories, generally she made a complete tit of herself.

Get her on TV more, let potential Lib Dem voters see what a charlatan they are voting for.

I'd like a Swinson v Farage debate.

Again I'm not sure the standout LibDem policies. Bearing in mind I think Brexit will not be the key deciding issue overall.

The LibDem argument on the Coalition was they stopped some things and got some things done (which I can't think of immediately).

But the damage done by austerity is exposed by reality on the ground and the fact both big parties are now reversing it.

LibDems are very vulnerable to their record in Government no matter how much they deny it. And they also let in the DUP and prevented a compromise Brexit deal by refusing to consider another coalition in 2017. So are also proven to be petulant.

Like it or not, Farage would rip any of the main leaders a new one, as imo he's the best orator out of them all.

Unfortunately this.

It’s why Blair did so well initially in my opinion - great orator but wasn’t a extremist. It’s what both Labour and the Conservatives need right now but we’ve ended up with polar opposites and bloody Jo Swinson left pretending to be the middle ground.

That old chestnut.

Pretending that being in coalition prevented the Tories from being even worse than they were.

You know what else would have prevented that?
NOT being in a coalition, the Tories being a minority government and the LibDems voting against all the bad policies like austerity.

Like it or not, track record, credibility, the Tories' historic contempt for Scotland and the vulnerable are very, very relevant and I won't tire of calling them liars, shysters, hypocrites and downright nasty *******s.

They chose for people to be poorer. Austerity by choice.

I'd probably want to focus on promises rather than track record too.
