U.S. Politics megathread (merged)

Slightly related but I’m watching a documentary on Sky Arts about Jimmy Carter’s love of music. They’ve just spoken about the Camp David accord meeting with Sadat and Begin. Fourteen days of the three of them in intense meetings on a hill thrashing out a deal. I for one could imagine Trump in fourteen hours of such meetings.
Also bonus points to Carter for his, mostly, great taste in music.

Trump impeachment trial to begin next week. I was wondering if this time they can insist he testify. He didn't last time because apparently they couldn't force a sitting president to do so.

But more interesting than that. Lat time Trump had initially wanted to testify. The lawyers ran through a practice question session with him and said he must not testify. Apparently Trump says you think i'm a bad witness? You know he's the best in the world ever at everything.

But they said you're a terrible witness. You do this you will talk yourself out of office and into jail.  When they were putting questions to him he just did the usual thing. Replied with blatant and easily deconstructed lies. Exactly the same thing that landed a bunch of those who did testify in prison.

Start of trial delayed until week of 8th Feb

Chuck Schumer giving the statement to the House about the arrangements. States in one part about the charges that the President  incited an erection.  Looked down and realised he should have said Insurrection.

On a related note, is it just me, or has the American political scene become a lot quieter since Twitter shut Trump up?  Whatever the reason, it's a pleasant change.

It's meant to be a 'badge of honour' if the new President calls you first.

Easy pickings first more like.

:biggrin2: No. This is what it looks like below. In saying that though, it might well be because you're posting images from Twitter and my NoScript extension is, by choice, set to disable twitter images by default. In fact I'm fairly sure that will be the case. So, issue solved!

If it's just going to be the same old same old from Biden and the Dems, I'd rather Trump had won. At least he had comedy value. Ripping the pish out of Biden just isn't the same.

I try not to get my news from captions, so what was he saying in general (to save me having to go watch it)?

He's enforcing masks in federal places, so that's something. He's also talked about masks for 100 days. But prior to that caption, so maybe he's since given up on that.

It was a pretty long talk about primarily economic issues under the pandemic and his plan to reopen. He said "failing to act" would mean a ton of evictions, foreclosures, etc., trying to lay out reasons for reopening, in order to minimise things like evictions, more job losses, and so forth.

A million people or more people dying of disease or saddled with permanent morbidities because of it, is an acceptable cost of doing business for the ruling elite.

Cheers JZ.

So do you have any optimism things might be a fraction more socialist this time? Or are the cogs that make capitalist America function too deep down to get at? The press coverage of Biden is being spun as all positive because his actions are being compared to what Trump did, but that isn't exactly hard so I'm taking it all with a pinch of salt.

I am in full on cynic mode. When Trump and Republicans were talking about "opening back up for the economy" a cadre of Democratic governors pushed back, calling it insane, that it was sacrificing people for profit.

And now that it's exactly Biden's plan? Crickets, as far as I've been able to tell.

Haha when it comes to American politics, pretty much! There was a brief window early last year before the dems colluded to kneecap Sanders though.

I did really want to have hope and give this administration a fair chance to prove me wrong. But cynicism is never far behind :)

If the US is just going to be exactly the same, same foreign policy, same domestic policy, same taxation and policing and health policy, then why the **** is Biden any better?

He might be a nicer person than the Trumpet, but if they don't change anything, what's the point? Might as well have a president to rip the pish out of.

Early signs are Justin and a whole host of other folk will be correct. Biden will just slow down the constant drive to the right in American politics. The US will just get worse. I said before the election, Trump winning might not have been such a bad thing in the long run. That way, the US would've crashed and burned a whole lot quicker and could rebuild itself as a proper modern day country that actually gives a shit for those that are worst off.

Instead, it looks like we have to watch the Titanic slowly, slowly head towards the iceberg, with all the 1st class passengers dancing away happy with themselves, and the 3rd class folk stuck in the shit and consigned to death, oblivious to what is ahead.

Who knows, it's early days, maybe Biden will prove them wrong and reverse the trend in US politics but I seriously doubt it.

I am no Biden fan, but I do think he is making an effort to deal with some of the problems. He is having a meting with Dems and Republicans, thats not something that has been tried too much in the last four years. He has been President for four days I am prepared to give him a chance, I can't say I ever did that for Trump, I disliked him before he became President, and of the few things in life I have improved at, I was able to dislike him more and respect him less.  I still think Biden is too old for the job, I also think he is seen by the Democrat hierarchy as a safe but not dynamic place keeper for Kamala, and the party will be the cane to enable him to walk safely. I really don't see him as Moses  leading the throng, but as a faithful old spaniel which will behave, walk well on the leash, and sit, stay  when told.

Pompeo - what an absolute toilet of an individual;

Giuliani: fight with combat?  (at rally). Also he was his lawyer cos no firm will take Trump on.

Riots: that footage said to me they would have killed folk given the chance

I'm surprised to learn that you're turning cynical after only a few days, Justin.    The USA and the whole world is in a crisis right now, so expecting sweeping changes in  domestic policies of any government seems a bit of a stretch.

Even getting back on board the Climate Change train and rejoining the WHO gives the  new regime some early kudos - low hanging fruit if you want to call it that.  A lot of much more difficult  domestic challenges ahead of course - some of them toxic thanks to Trump's racist/arrogant view of what matters most in America.     Regardless of what Biden's plans are to contain the spread of Covid, if he has some at all then he's already ahead of Trump on that.  At least he'll give a proper role to the scientists and medical experts.

Presumably he won't want continuing  BLM protests whenever the police over-react  ......  but changing the culture of police over-reaction to black folk suspected of a crime will be a huge task (same as it is in the big English cities).    Would failing to do that leave  Biden labelled as "another  Trump" ?   Harsh if it did,  imo.

I remember 9/11 and thinking how Giuliani had conducted himself with total admiration. That comment is just the extremes of crass and inflammatory.

There was interview with one of the policemen on duty who was getting cornered. He basically had to plea to the baying mob about being a father in order to save his life.

Yes, I remember hearing that. The idea of no impeachment because the country needs to heal holds no.merit. Yet, since, I hsve heard, predictably,  interviews that try and reduce the significance if what happened. Cause and effect has to be Hitler &  Auschwitz levels for these guys and even then.. A cynical denial of anything. Practiced and perfected.

I have seen it often on JKB, even a broken clock gives the correct time twice a day.

Of course he has joined the fruit loop brigade he is one also.

Of course Trump uses him, he says nothing when Trump doesn't pay him

Both have an affinity for hair dyes, Trump pays barbers$80,000 a year to have his done, Rudy buys his at Walmart and does it himself. He is so scary even the hair dye runs.
