"phone banker", "voter shaming", "shitlib"

You've lost me there now, Justin. Must be American terms, I've genuinely never heard of any of them, although I assume they're not particularly complimentary. :)

None of them is aimed at you. A phone banker literally gets on the phone and calls people to try to convince them to vote for their candidate. Shitlib Democrats (blue no matter who, and they mean it literally—it could be Hitler as long as it's not Trump) have decided shaming people in the fashion you are doing right now is a better use of their time.

11 minutes ago, redjambo said:

The Democrats will only win this by forgetting their divisions and getting behind Biden, no matter how pissed off they are with him being the remaining choice, getting Trump out, and then using activism within the party and in Congress to influence Biden's actions in order to try to achieve the policy that they want.

I'm not a Democrat and have never been a Democrat.

Democrats have given me and millions of other progressives exactly zero reason to do any of what you wrote here. We're more than willing to, with minimal concessions. All we get is Biden shitting on Bernie as in recent days. Again. And "but he's not Trump." That's not earning a vote.

11 minutes ago, redjambo said:

But no, far better to just have a go at Biden before he takes on the Trump in the forthcoming vote. Yeah, that'll show 'em.

You get the feeling that perhaps Biden is going with the 4-6-0 formation on this one. Make the priority not to lose any goals. Be solid, don't lose any voters, don't make any enormous faux-pas. Not my favourite approach to be honest - I would prefer to see some good box-to-box action. :)

Not to mention showing the least bit of legitimate anger at what has happened in this country the past three and a half years.

That would, of course, require some genuine feelings on the matter.

This is the best way forward, and this joke of a debate proves it more than ever. Seriously, change my mind. If you are watching this and aren't thinking this country is completely ****ed and that supporting this system—in any way—is wrong, I don't see how you can be anything but a blind partisan hack.

But, I do tend to get a bit . . . excited. So seriously. Please. Prove me wrong. I want a reason to vote in good faith.

I think referring to Trump as "this clown" qualifies. There has to be some restraint.

"Radical Socialists".

The  majority of Americans wouldn't know one if a copy of Das Kapital bonked them on the heid. Naw, never read it.

Exactly. So when you say reality tells me it's better to have the other shitty septuagenarian, it gives me pause.

Does electing him, normalising the idea that he, a man to the right of Reagan is—or is at least supported by—"radical socialists", shifting the "centre" in this country even further to the right than it has been for the past four decades, good? Is giving liberals every reason to stop fighting because they're comfortable in a blue non-democracy but uncomfortable in a red one, meaning they might radicalise and actually do something, good?

That's just two of about a hundred negative consequences. I genuinely don't know the answer.

Thanks for explaining the terms. :)

How am I shaming you though? I don't give a feck who you vote for. I simply do not want to see Trump spending another 4 years in office and I would prefer Biden to get him out of there. What I just don't understand is why left-wingers would not vote Trump out. My vote in Scotland, at its most fundamental, has always been anti-Tory - I'll vote for the party that has the best chance to keep them out. I have no realistic option to vote in a party who wants to achieve exactly what I would like to see, but I'll do my best to keep the right-wing from being in power and hope that by doing so we can make and keep centre-left politics the norm.

Anyway, I guess we just have different approaches to the question. I lost my idealism many years ago so I suppose it's nice to see that you still have yours.

And no, I wouldn't like Hitler to take Trump's place. There's making a point and there's taking it to extremes. ;)

Scotland is not like here. The Democrats are to the right of the Tories. Is it really just that for you? This equation doesn't work in the US.

I appreciate this because honestly I feel utterly cynical at all times when I'm in the States.

Back to my point if you shout lies lies loud enough people believe them.

I believe I do know what the answer isn't. And despite your mental conundrum, so do you.

You mean the answer isn't to do anything that upholds this system in any meaningful way? Agreed 💯

Trump win, but more heat than light. He's got a limited repertoire and just constantly interrupts.

On the plus side I won't be staying up late to watch the next debate.

Admittedly I'm laughing at Trump crying about election fraud after he lost the popular vote by three million and still became president.

What a weapons-grade *****

Trump is just me me me.

He won't address a single point of criticism against him. He just attacks rather than addressing issues levied against him.

This has not been a victory for either, but it shows an inherent frailty in Trump. Next two debates will be fun.

Biden didn't cover himself in glory, but i suspect only one of their handlers has their head in their hands right now.

Trump's answers about accepting election outcomes is terrifying.

As we all know, all that's necessary to remove a despot from office is to vote him out.

Feck knows what happened there.

Can’t really disagree, but good luck in finding any system that isn't ****ed to some degree. (or totally, for that matter)

Na, Biden has finished far stronger. The last 30 mins has been Trump pouting. He started stronger to be be fair.

The voter fraud aspect will lose Trump more votes than it gains him. It's only to galvanise his base, it won't persuade any independents.

Minging debate though

Summed up perfectly by the woman on the CNN panel, what a shit-tip of a debate.

From what I just saw whoever wins, the doomsday clock just ticked closer to midnight for the USA.

Katty Kay on BBC is amazing right now. Absolutely seething and disgusted at the whole thing.  Said it was like watching her kids fight.

Careful she doesn't criticise Biden though, or she's doing the Republicans' work for them. 🙄

President ****ing Trump won't condemn white supremacists, shouts out to the Proud Boys, and a local National Public Radio station reflects the state of American politics with this Twitter poll:

I just finished an hour and a half of my life I can never get back, after it concluded the female CNN reporter  coming on to talk about it called it a shitshow.

It is sad that one of the most powerful countries in the world can produce two men to take the job who are both low level candidates. Trump is an ignorant buffoon, Biden I quite like as a person, gave him high marks for calling Trump a clown, he is I would think a nice man, but he has been in the business for forty seven years its a long time to wait to have his best chance of election but he is just too old., sorry Joe but I have been your age and a lot of it is still there, but you do lose some of the zip.

I wouldn't if I was a considering voter have found much to influence my vote. I do think Biden is better mannered, respectful and genuine, I cannot say anything about Trump other than he is rude, bullying and just not a nice person. If I was an American i do think not for anything other than the personalities and manners of the two my vote would be for Biden. My fear would be that in fact my vote may well be for President to be Harris, considering Bidens age, But what is the alternative, Kanye West, what a situation hundreds of millions of population and , some of the worlds top schools Harvard, Princeton et al and that is the best choices put forward. I can understand so well my Arizonan {and hope he will condone my using the term friend} his terrible quandary of what a good, interested citizen should do in making the choice where to place his vote on two less than truly worthy candidates.

That was a disgraceful performance and the whole world was watching.  Neither candidate came out looking good, and Mike Wallace was a failure as a moderator.

Trump proved what many of us already knew, that he's an ignorant, loud-mouthed bully and a racist.  Biden spent too much time laughing at Trump instead of being outraged, and too much time looking down at his notes instead of looking at the American people (i.e. the camera). Neither candidate looked suitable for the job.

If I was an American I'd be appalled and depressed.
