Yikes - where were those houses ?     House builders didn't bother doing the geology/subsidence risk analysis ?

I think it was Ferniehill.

It's for Firemen's training.  There's similar ones at Crewe Toll and Kirk Brae fire stations and probably elsewhere.

Didn't realise my missus was a tram driver in a previous incarnation.

:D

To be fair, she probably tried swerve to avoid those idiots standing in the middle of the road, and having that crowd standing around was probably a bit off putting. Fair play to the tram company though, they got the alternative service bicycles there quickly.

Gilmerton, all demolished by 2000 along with others in Hyvots. Old mines below gave way.

Lived in Hyvots all my life. Was travelling America at the time when we were told to leave. Came back to a new house for the first time in my life.

Nah. I think it was something like Coda. I'm sure the name will come to me. It was next door to Thorntons.

In all seriousness, what actually happened? And when was the accident?

1st June 1929. Apparently someone left at the terminus and didn't appy the handbrake.

Wester Hailes has to be the worst area in Edinburgh.

My family are from there originally so I'm not being stuck up.

The buildings (especially the high flats) are pretty terrible.

Is Wester Hailes in Hailesland? Or is it its own area. Never known this.

Wester Hailes was originally a farm, with the farm buildings where Clovenstone Terrace is today (part closest to Clovenstone Road).

Canning House was the original name of what is now called Exchange Tower. It opened in 1968 and house BT staff when the PO and BT split into separate businesses.

The painted sign on the Black Bull reminds me of the old licensing law in Scotland relating to the serving of alcohol on Sundays.   I think it was only bona fide travellers who could be served a drink - possibly only along with a meal, not sure - up until the late 60s or early 70s.  Maybe even later.

Think it finished about 70, not 100% though. Pretty certain you didn't need a meal though.

Heres how it was explained to me by old guys (mostly all gone now) in Blackburn who had "bona fide" pubs, it had to be in a different county to where you lived and you needed a return bus ticket to....lets say Bellshill. You were allowed to leave the bus en route to seek refreshment before continuing to your destination. Everyone in Blackburn used Harthill and Harthill went to Whitburn/Blackburn/Bathgate. No one ever reached their final destination. All seems a bit mental nowadays.

Yeah, seems quite odd.  Its almost as if the scheme had been dreamt up by the SMT bus companies to increase their revenue !!  😃

No sure how it worked if you were one of the few (fewer than nowadays) car owners who were willing to drive others.

When I first started going out drinking, in the early 70s, only hotels could serve drink on a Sunday.  There was usually one establishment in each town or village which had hotel status by having a couple of rooms available to have occupied by guests. Most of them hardly ever actually attracted any guests, but it allowed them to open on a Sunday, and have their busiest day of the week.

It was all, of course, to allow us to go to church without the temptation of alcohol preventing this.

I think the licensing laws changed, to allowing public houses to open on Sundays, when the 10pm chucking out time was ditched but it could have been before then.
