The painted sign on the Black Bull reminds me of the old licensing law in Scotland relating to the serving of alcohol on Sundays.   I think it was only bona fide travellers who could be served a drink - possibly only along with a meal, not sure - up until the late 60s or early 70s.  Maybe even later.

It was still the case in 78 or 79. We used to go to a hotel up by the American consulate (Royal Ter?) And we had to sign the visitors book. 🙄😁

Miss the regular posts on this thread.

I think all known sources of historical photographs have been exhausted.

We used to head up to Royal Terrace mid to late 80's. If not there it was down to Leith Links in either The Cambro or The Cullane.

Late to the thread and possibly been answered but was that the asylum, maybe called Bedlam?

Well I could have deleted my post but hey ho.

It was the Calton Jail I think.

https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usreviews/books/historycaltonjail.html

The Bedlam asylum was on Bristo Place, where the Bedlam theatre is. It was demolished in 1845 with the patients moving to a new asylum in Morningside.

I hope that @Maroon Sailor is ok?  It’s been a while since he was on here, I always thought he seemed a really decent bloke.

Great pic.  Ironside hairdressers in the background.  Used to get my hair cut there as a lad - ladies at the front of the shop, gents through the back.

Perhaps I’ve got the wrong angle here, but wasn’t there a shop called ‘Tools’ around there in the early 80’s?

Murray’s Tools. On the left just as you turned onto Dalry Road. They also had a shop on Morrison Street opposite where the conference centre is now.

I think so too. To the right is the traffic lights at the end of Sir Harry Lauder Road etc The garage is now a Lidle or Aldi store.
