Tunics, hats on, clean shaven regulation haircuts and polished boots. Not a man bun or hipster beard in sight. Sorted.

The nearest one has the look of Mr Mackay from Porridge.

that part of Leith Street has an important part in my memory. Seventeen wanting to go to the army, my father against it, but had his ambition for me to be in the police. One of his workmates had a son in the police and he had been in the Scots Guards and his father told mine that was the way to get in the police for sure. One day I was on a tram going down to Leith when I saw a guy I knew Dave Scougal and two other Scots Guardsman they were standing together and having a good laugh, Scougal also became a policeman, they looked so smart and those hats with the peak over their eyes sold me. When I went home I said the Guards were my next move and a couple of months later I was in, and the rest is a succesful history, but I always think of that wee bit of Leith Street and that three soldiers just having a laugh to themselves.

Great story.

My old man managed his first pub which was behind the cathedral, Horse Shoe Bar, in the mid fifties. The Register Tap pub was also knocked down to build the shopping centre....👍

Love that one.

So many things for me to pick out in that small area.

My Uncle's house, my cousins house, my sisters house, mates houses, my primary school, Queensberry House where my Grandad spent the last 10 years of his life, the church I was christened in, the parks, gardens and graveyard I played in, my old workplace, and just cropped out by yards either side, my house and my folks house 🙂

Slave market? 😮

Here's a blow up of part of the image. There is an address on the sign that may read "122 Princes St"

Post Office directory might list if there was a business at that address.

Excellent photo, giving a different view of the Canongate.

My Paternal Grandmother's lot lived at Dunbar's Close (next door to the Kirk) and on this photo you can now see the landscaped gardens with trees etc.  It's very nice nowadays.  The present day building dates from the 1930's, but my lot lived there from the 1850's to the early 1900's and would have reconized the below sketch from 1852, which shows that there used to be houses in what is now the gardens.

Interesting photo! That looks like Porty with the power station and open-air pool in the foreground.

Marine Gardens football ground (Leith Athletic) in the bottom-left of the scene?

For some reason it always felt a bit desperate having a pint in either of the pubs in the bus station. Like they weren’t proper pubs.

Agreed. I always felt the odd “feel” to these places was due to the clientele being transitory (as opposed to “regular”).
