👍

Apparently that was the opening to Homebase.

Before that Ushers Brewery was there.

Castle o' Clouts pub became the car park for Homebase. Demolished 1969. Ushers Brewery was behind it

And the Halfway House pub next to the Lane up to the Masonic.

The Masonic - Was that a watering hole back in the day for Jambos on the way to Easter Rd ?

I seem to recall being absolutely battered there more than once.

The Masonic certainly is. The Halfway House was demolished a long time ago. Early 80’s I seem to remember.

Thats the view of the empty space where I took my fall, and the two housebreakers came back to see if I was alright. I guess in those days polis and bad guys had certain rules about how we treated each other, we could lay damege on the other but no outsider or even nature could attack us without reaction.

My having been a sergeant in the guards I would have been prompted to tell that man "get a haircut you scruffy man."

Looks like a business selling gravestones on the left before Pilrig Street.

Yes that was it it was different levels like something had been demolished, I went down like a bag of .... and the guys came back and said are you alright Polis and when I said Aye fine, they took off at speed again. The one guy I ran into for years after, and he was the one when his wife offered me a cup of tea for recovering her stolen pram, and he saw me in his house, he said Is he the only f...ing Polis in Edinburgh.

I lived for a short while in 1978/79 in Spey Terrace, just up behind via Middlefield. Now that you've mentioned it that seems vaguely familiar, on the side up the Walk of that plot was the St Cuthberts, where I'd collect the wee stamps by the 100s, and 1000s, mainly from folk who'd fling them away, and lick them into books for redeemable goods, goodness knows what!  Not Frys peppermint cremes though, or a quarter of cola cubes, got them every Friday after school, at the wee paper sweetie shop right opposite Middlefield.

A remarkable amount of photographers over the years seem to have been taken by people in the middle of the Grassmarket pointing their camera towards the castle.

When I was back recently a mate and I did a bit of a nostalgia tour of the old stomping grounds, drove down to the bottom of that hill.

The aforementioned mate was brought up directly opposite Leckies coalyard.

We both went to Preston Street Primary.

So you are still going back pretty regular Jim. I haven't been back in  can't remember how long, don't miss it, and to be honest I would be a wee bit afraid whether I could handle all the changes. When I came to Canada I really worked at settling here, and not going back all the time, which was tempting, however when both parents were gone the need seemed so much less. I am happy for you that you obviously still get much pleasure from the old home grounds, I do have a wee bit of envy, sometimes feel disloyal. Now with life doing its thing and so many happy memories of life here, I guess to Canada I am like a bad smell, hard to get rid of.
