I will say Leith Street looking back up towards Princes Street with the Pawnbrokers being on the corner of Little King Street where the entrance to John Lewis is now.

First thought it was Home Street with Lochrin Terrace on the right, looking back up towards the Kings but it was the faint outlines of what appear to be buildings that threw me off that idea.

My first thoughts were

It is Leith Street. This photo was in the Evening News with the caption 'These tenements stood roughly where the lower entrance to John Lewis is today.'  The building with the 3 wee, I don't know what you'd call them...balcony things :D , is the one in the other photo and there's a sing for Miller Radio next to it.

Is that outside Fairbairns in Leith?

Don't know where it is but it's Hogmanay and they are queuing up for booze by the looks of it

Looks like it, used to 'chum' my grandad there in the early 70's for the Christmas/NY booze, they were known for the cheaperst drink in Edinburgh at the time.

Foot of Bath St, Portobello. Buildings on right now demolished, I think it was the old Marine Bar, with , in latter years a dive called Grannie''s Attic above it. How the hell planning permission was granted for the ultra modern flats now occupying the site I'll never know. Maybe a brown envelope job?

There were, allegedly, a few brown envelopes changing hands for the “benefit” of changing Edinburgh’s landscape back in the day.

Remember Pottinger and Poulson, I think they were called? They got caught. Plenty more wouldn’t have.

Is Brandon Terrace not in Canonmills?  Stretches from corner of Eyre Place round to the bridge over the Water of Leith at Warriston

Sorry for being pedantic 🙂

Nowt wrong with a bit of pedantry.  :)

I knew it was near Eyre Place so just assumed it was Stockbridge. I'm sure I've seen estate agents use Stockbridge for Brandon Street addresses, but then Stockbridge probably sells better than Canonmills.

Further digging I found it was closed in July 1959

I had to get this one right because my Dad lived in Canon Street, which runs down to near the foot of Brandon Terrace and my G&G lived for near on 60 years in the same tiny flat in Eyre Place.   Their block was demolished and lay as an empty gap site, looks like it still is and that is a bit surprising given how much a new flat in a new development in that area would go for.

Canonmills area is now very popular and costs an arm and a leg for a property there, probably in some cases as much as in Stockbridge.  A few years ago I viewed a flat in Perth Street about 100 yards from top of Branden Terrace and it was offers over 275k, bet it is even more now.

I had a mate who lived in Corstorphine and he put his house up for sale under Murrayfield.  Edinburgers, all show and nae nickers:pleased:

I can’t thank you enough for all these photos that you post.

No problem - I like reading the stories and also finding out things I didn't know.

It's a great City - no doubt about that

A tram on it's way to Blackpool - probably still in use !

At least they provided the transport to take it down.

The photo's from 1858 and the National Gallery (the one at the back.  I can never remember what one's what) opened in 1859, so maybe building materials for that.

I agree completely. This is a fascinating thread, especially for those of us old enough to remember some of the ‘lost’ street scenes.

You are correct, trams passing Piershill Sq East, with square West further back on the right, my granny lived in Sq East, spent many days and nights there.

I am not great at using the "net, but messed around and saw a couple of pictures and there was a mention of a Glasgow exhibition. Using a magnifying glass it looks like the stuff in the picture is what could be used in some type of exhibition in one of the Galleries.  Sorry that type of search and even remembering how I got it  is weak, but I looked up Edinburgh buildings 1858.
