My dad (the most dedicated Jambo I've ever met) worked as a lounge waiter in the RB in the late 1950s. At the end of his shift each night, I'd drive in from Gilmerton, park outside the hotel, dash in for a quick nip on the house, then drive him home talking about Hearts all the way. Happy days. Montgomery Brewster
Amazing the amount of quality stone built buildings that were flattened in the name of progress. I know a fair few were in poor state internally / not safe but the council need chased for allowing some of the disasters that replaced them. Worked as a volunteer driver at the games, sent through to pick up the athletes at Prestwick airport and take them to the athlete village next to the Commonwealth pool. Driving them to the events, had Adrian Moorhouse, Lynsey Macdonald, and an up and coming future world heavyweight champion boxer from Canada in the car, amongst others, great memories. Sharpie
Does anyone else remember or has heard of the time I think it was the first flats being built in the Pilton area, at one point a worker walked on to the balcony they all had and it collapsed as did the others it hit on the way down. I seem to recall they had been installed the wrong way, obvously, probably upside down. Quite a story in the papers of the day, with pictures, happened pre 1967.
