Im on my phone and zooming in it looks like the word Whisky bottom left of the sign underneath the 'rge IV'. Its pretty blurry but at a push Id say the other words were Old Scotch.

Washerwomen on Calton Hill. Date c1880

The airy heights of Calton Hill around the 1880s. This magnificent image by the great Thomas Vernon Begbie gives us a great contrast between some of the wealthier women of Edinburgh and the working women of the day, who are likely doing the household washing of the other women. Its intriguing to see the 'better dressed' New Town women resting, after a leisurely walk up to the top of Calton Hill, while the washer women labour away within feet of them.

this was discussed a wee while ago, Canmore mentions Tobago Street which was part of Morrison St. Is this Morrison St?

Yes, it looks like it disappeared around 1940.

Very surprising. Possibly other spots on Princes Street the same? I think there’s a tartan tat(or it used to be) shop you have to go down stairs to get into.

the caption say

The carriageways and pavements of Princes Street, like much of the New Town, sit atop a man-made causeway with cellars under the road itself.

This fact would have been obvious until around c1910, the era this photograph was taken, when there were still buildings along our main thoroughfare that had the original Georgian configuration of railings, basements, cellars and steps. Today there is just one and it's adjacent to Primark.

In the case of 118 Princes Street - the building to our left in this photo - the frontage was heavily altered and an extension built soon after this image was taken.

I bet there's still evidence of those cellars in the basement of what is now HSBC though

Thanks for that. Trying to picture it as something similar to queen street.

I can't get my head round what all the fortifications top right belong to. Any ideas? Also trying to work out where the Royal High School is or would have been.

As TFR has said above, it was a prison. Looked a pretty amazing looking one too, would love to have seen it in the flesh...from the outside.

Wow! I never knew there was a prison there. What was it called do you know? I'm guessing it's where the Scottish Office now stands on Regent Road and I wonder if any of the SO building was previously the prison?

It was called Calton Jail. The Governors House is the only part left....

Cheers. A friend told me this earlier but I don't have any memory of being told this when I was younger.  Having said that, the picture above, is that not what fat boy Salmond wanted to turn into his "first minister" castle a few years ago? Ironic to say the least if it was.

1964 Prefab Craigmiller

Its been a long time bit I don't recall there still being prefabs in Craigmillar in 1964, the last I recall were in the Greendykes area. I of course may be being a bit semantic,  to many these other sites were all Craigmillar, but we were more inclined to specificity.
