I would prefer to see leaders who 'mentor' by playing well and showing attitudes on the pitch that young players can aspire to. Sandy Jardine gets mentioned (Quite rightly, as he was tremendous) but he played every week alongside Levein. Jimmy Bone and Sandy Clark also played every week alongside Robbo. Hughes, McLean and Cowie are all cited as mentors, but none of them are likely to play regularly. Totally agree NB but would also add - and sorry to appear to be beating the same old drum (it'll be the last time, honest) but I must say that the deliberate "passing" on signing the best potential player/coach we ever had in Rudi Skacel really sticks in my craw. I find it incredible that other than myself, no-one appears to want to pick up on the utter incongruity of that now gone possibility when viewed against all the crap written on here regarding the potential mentorial abilities of the likes of Hughes McLean Cowie et al (especially by those that have the audacity to use RC in some way in their user names/avatars etc) Some folk appear to have very short memories. If people cannot see the reasons for the potential signing of MacLean, then they should take up croquet. It is totally low risk, with potential benefits that are obvious to anyone with a clue. A replacement for Lafferty Oh oh Naismith must be leaving. Listen up. Lafferty is going nowhere and I'm confident Naismith will be here as well next season. So quit panicking, ditch the conspiracy theories and engage your brains before posting shit. There have been many fair points put forward on here as to why McLean would be a decent signing, and quite a few pointing out why he wouldn;t be. If you cannot see why signing a 35-yr old St Johnstone striker, after the season we have just had and where we don't know if we have guys like Naismith next season, is causing negative feedback then may i kindly ask you to engage your brains before posting shit. Or just stick to innuendoes.

Aye well, i suppose the Head Coach needs to be able to work with his team and perhaps thought Rudi was not the best fit. The SPFL are introducing 'mentor' rules next season. Every player under 20 will be able to have a mentor attached to him by a tether not more than 3 metres in length. The mentor can only speak to the young player. He cannot touch the ball, make tackles or influence play in any way other than by verbal direction to his young player. If the mentor gets sent off, the young player has to go to, and vice versa. As innovators, we are well down the road on our mentoring programme and hope to have our tethers sponsored by Screwitup Edited April 13, 2018 by Escobar PHM

RS86
Naismith and Lafferty with McClean and Keena as back up options could work out well. McClean is a talented player and his experience can only be a good thing for us, the main concern would be his fitness as he has had his fair share of injuries in the past few years. We already have the best defence outside of them. As you say, the major surgery is in the midfield, where we do need 2/3 quality players on top of what we have and really need to let a couple go. The midfield needs pace, creativity a left side and a bit of depth. Quality players ( strikers) won't be lining up to play for us to sit on the bench and get paid less than £1.5k a week. We should not be signing players who are happy to sit on the bench and that is one of my issues.
