I would like a new RB/RWB - Don't feel Atkinson is consistent enough and I doubt we'll keep Dexter. Also would like to see some forwards signed. I can't shake the feeling that our attack is actually bang average and its just fortunate that we have such a fantastic striker in Shankland. Would like to raise the standards of the players Shanks has around him.

I know what you mean, but you are still effectively saying ‘our attack would be rubbish if we didn’t have our best player’.

 

We do need decent backup. I like Vargas and hope we keep him. I like Oda too, but I don’t think Boyce (for all that he has been great for us) is a reliable option any more, and Tagawa is unproven at best. So I’d hope we are looking for at least one more in that area (two if we cash in on Shankland, which has to be a real possibility).

I know where you're coming from, and if we didn't have Shankland we'd have had probably a 10-15 goal a season striker in there instead, but my issue is that it just doesn't seem like the players around him are doing their bit. Shankland regularly having to drop as deeply as he does because he's not seeing hide nor hair of the ball is a problem IMO. 

 

I'm not saying anyone is shit, just that getting some improvements in wouldn't go a miss. Armstrong or Cowan for example would be huge signings.

Why would we want to sell Rowles? Our defence is generally decent apart from when we play the Huns. I think he's still got 3 or 4 years of contract left as well. Not sure anyone would pay what we'd want for him. 

It seems clear that there's something going on with Cochrane so I reckon he might leave. Not heard anything about Penrice in a while.

It'll be extremely interesting to see what happens with Shankland. I don't see the Huns paying what we'd want and there hasn't been much if any concrete interest from elsewhere. I'd be sad to see him go but if we get a good offer then I understand why he'd want to go and we'd let him.

I think if he goes he goes for a lot more than that, especially with his contract situation, fact he is a full international with WC experience. All these things add money to any fee, especially if its from a league that has money to spend.

Definitely wouldn’t be a like for like replacement for Shankland (if he indeed goes) but I wonder if we’d make a move for Jonson Clarke-Harris from Peterborough. Out of contract in the summer, out of favour completely there too and his January moved to Charlton failed on personal terms. Think they had a agreed a fee of £500k for him in January but the move fell through. Would have been teammates with Frankie and Jorge Grant too so some familiar faces and the opportunity to play in Europe would surely tempt him too.

Good player for sure but Devante Cole for me is the out of contract League 1 striker we should be looking at. Previous Scottish football experience at Motherwell he is scoring for fun at Barnsley and has been a key player there for the last two seasons.

I mentioned Cole earlier I the thread. He's banging them in for Barnsley and what I can remember of him he was fairly fast. I wouldn't want him as a replacement for Shanks I'd want him along with Shanks and Vargas. I'm with the previous poster, I'd rather keep Shankland next season and lose him for nothing because no matter how much money we get, we aren't replacing him. Who knows what will happen after next season, he'll be nearly 30 and circumstances may change.

I think the fact that all the papers have said he has signed a pre-contract and neither Hearts nor Ross County put a statement out saying that is not true means its pretty safe to say he has signed.

 

Penrice was that he is in talks, no mention yet of any agreement. Phillips was talk on here and from St Johnstone fans saying we are in talks. Again nothing confirmed.

I'm coming round to that view too. 

 

He's pretty much irreplaceable unless we gamble huge money on someone (who might not contribute the same number of goals as Shanks) so if he doesn't sign a new contract in the summer  we'd be as well to just get that final year from him.   It would give our recruitment team longer to monitor possible striker targets who are just starting to blossom this season.

 

Robbie signed Shanks at the perfect time - proved he could score well in the Championship with Dundee Utd, followed by a poor time in Belgium which kept his price within our range.
