The Ashes 2023

Brilliant seeing all the negative comments from England fans and some journalists. Johnny Bairstow has missed some very hard chances. Looks like they don't like the new approach. Slagging off the declaration when it looked like Australia were going to get a big lead. Though now its raining maybe they can do something different.

Can't see there being anymore today, sadly.

Weather forecast positive for tomorrow but uncertain Tuesday.

Is Bairstow better than Foakes?

Much better batter definitely

Foakes marginally better keeper

Bringing in Foakes improves wicket keeping but Bairstow miles better batsman.

Depends on what you think is more important. For me, play Foakes, drop Stokes and play Bairstow as batter or else, drop Moeen and let Root bowl spin.

Ali's finger looked badly blistered so he won't spin it much anyway.

I think not including a front line spinner will cost England in this one

Didn't realise Duckett didn't leave a ball during his second innings. Playing at everything is a method that got him picked but it seems very risky against bowlers like Boland and Hazelwood who are content to pepper the off stump and move the ball.

Very evenly poised but England have had the better of the batting and bowling conditions so far, well except for a 20 minute spell this afternoon when Australia took those 2 wickets, just goes to show what an important toss it was to win for England. Really hope there is a bit of cloud cover tomorrow. Two new batsmen in both on nought, could be some day. Nice to be working from home the next couple of days.

Sunny day forecast tomorrow.

Rain and sunny spells on Tuesday.

If England get 250 ahead could be very interesting last day with the forecast! Those conditions that hurt England today could work in their favour on day 5. But they need a decent score to defend!

First hour or so crucial tomorrow. Root goes and England could crumble, whereas no wickets let's England build lead.

We wait and see.

First hour goes England's way in some style. Root attempts and misses a ramp shot v Pat Cummins very first ball but repeats against Boland and hits a 4 & 6. England notch 83 for 1 wicket (a peach of a delivery from Cummins) from the opening hour. Game on

Stokes has got away with one there.

Edit: actually it was missing anyway.

No idea why Root and the others are coming down wicket to Lyon. They were doing well enough sweeping and playing from crease and Root way to good a batsman to be out having a heave across line.

Given forecast tomorrow, does Stokes go for 200/220 lead and declare or does he play safe and bat on?

England in a bit of trouble now 5 down

don’t think 200 is near enough

need nearer 300 which is looking unlikely now

England in a state of near collapse now. Some incredible fielding from the Aussies that just fell short a couple of times would've seen them out even sooner.

< 250 advantage Aus
250-280 no clue, toss a coin
280 < advantage Eng

Surely fine Labuschagne for claiming that catch! FFS he'd have felt it on the ground

I didn't think the claim for a catch was at all convincing - yeah, he knew.

Bairstow and Root like statues. Thought Bairstow has to go for that. Don't think Australia have won a session, maybe one but now they're probably favourites. Great stuff this.

And swings back again. Wickets just seem to come out of nowhere every time one side seems settled and on top. Some game

That part of the country covered by a blanket of rain at the moment, but looks like it will clear off as we get towards late morning/early afternoon.

It may well do and there's already no play before lunch. The thing is though, the outfield that isn't under cover is going to be absolutely sodden and will take an age to dry out, even with their super sponges. Makes it more difficult for Australia to hit boundaries but really hope we get some cricket one way or another.

6/1 the draw?  How on Earth?

If the Aussies get into bat , they'll stroll this.

Having said that, it has been raining heavily all night and is still pouring down so hard to see how they'll get much play in.

Thats what I thought and the forecast now shows rain every hour all day.....6/1s a great price.

Draw

Teams look v evenly matched. The idea that bazball smashes the Aussies seems a bit presumptuous

Weather and history (this is a massive 4th innings target) against an Australia win.

A draw would be fair I think. Both sides warming up. English players won't always get out easily and Smith and Labuschagne will score.

England will just carry on the same. Australia have got more questions notably strangely setting defensive fields when they might attack. But its a very good contest.

Another pitch inspection at 13.20. Surface water causing issues at the moment. Possibly start with the lights on. This will be either a draw or an England win.

This is when cricket is so good. One wicket changes everything. Equally, 90 runs isn’t much to knock off but tough when it’s huge pressure.

come on england
