I don't know if it has been mentioned here but at one point British Cycling advised cyclists across the UK not to cycle during the funeral. After more than a wee bit of criticism, they back-pedalled furiously.

Seriously, obsequiousness to the royal family may cloud folk's judgements on a regular basis, but this one was a cracker.

God GSTQ ready to blast from my phone's speakers at the time of the two minute-silence. 👑

The Sex Pistols' version, of course :)

The only place to be on Monday.

Looking forward to the end of the Grief Olympics and a return to what counts as normality hereabouts.

Gerry Adams.

They used up their capacity for a minutes silence at Martin McGuinness' funeral.

They respect the right to free speech.

Which is more than you do obviously.

If the UK is so wonderful in your eyes why did you go to NZ ?

Foodbank volunteers, those opening up warm-banks this winter and school canteen workers who give the 4+ million kids who live in poverty in this country a meal.

An unelected, grossly overprivileged, and outdated tourist attraction?

Nah, no thank you.

Very fair response but I couldn't agree less with your penultimate sentence.  I respect your view however.

Probably someone who did more than just launch ships.

Like Mandela.

Or Robbo.   :notworthy:

My list would be pages long, so no point in naming them all here.

If you mean the Queen as a 96-year old mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, may she rest in peace.

If you mean the Queen who has been head of a vast real estate empire reputedly worth billions which gets favourable tax treatment, who "hid" 20 million in offshore accounts to avoid taxes, who paid 12 million to a young woman who has accused one son of sexual offences, who turned a blind eye to the adulterous behaviour of another son then welcomed his playmate into the family so that she is now your Queen.  If that is the Queen you're referring to, it's a mystery to me why anyone has respect for her.

1.  You have shown respect and I applaud that.

2.  Life is full of mysteries however I'm sure that as a devoutly religious woman, the Queen would have been deeply aware of her shortcomings.

Anyway, that's it for me on the subject.

1. Fair enough.

2. What a lot of rubbish.

Anyway, I’m glad ‘that’s it’ for you on the subject.

The republicans here in NZ are out in force aleady.  Our morning newspaper, we only have the one, has run cartoons on successive days mocking the new King.

Unfortunately for them, the last major poll conducted here 3 or 4 years ago had an 82% favourable rate for the monarchy.  Admittedly that was during the reign of the late Queen.

What we will see over the next couple of years here and in Australia is visits from the King and other senior royals.  They will shore up the monarchy and the people who dream of a socialist democratic republic will have their dreams shattered yet again.

I'm actually quite disappointed and embarrassed for some on this forum with their subservience to others. I'd never, going by their opinions I've read, for a minute thought they'd bow to no man... or woman.

At least I know now. And the sectarianism views they use  to justify their views are the biggest shame on Scotland.

I see the BBC were having a wee chuckle about John Knox, cleansing Catholics from Scotland. Shameful.

And it's good to see 75% of Scots believe the UK is 4 nations, not one. And less than a fifth believe that Britain is one country. And half are Tory onionists.

And Sturgeon played a blinder, anaw. One crown, 4 countries and Independence from the treaty of the union for Scotland, not the union of the crowns. That can be decided after independence.

Scotland/ The Kingdom of Scotland or The Democratic Republic of Scotland. I'm easy, whichever the people of Scotland decides.

Tory, labour, Green, Communist, let Scotland decide.

Tick Tock.
