periodictabledancer
As Labour heads for a landslide at the next GE (allegedly) with a "we agree with the tories" manifesto , a couple of interesting Tweets about their current conference : @MartinSLewis Shocked to have just been messaged that as I write, the London regional party at #LabourPartyConference is sponsored by a Buy Now Pay Later firm. And the founder was given platform to speak against regulation. Have these firms bought influence with every UK polical party? @Keir_Starmer are you now anti regulation too @MichaelLCrick This is big story of Labour conference: the sell-out to dubious businesses. The lobbyists; fringe meeting sponsors paying to make speeches; cash for access. And sod the unions. If only I still had a mic, a great cameraman, & an outlet. Please do it someone in TV or radio. But rightly or wrongly people tend to react emotionally immediately after acts of violence and provocation like this. I totally agree that a peaceful solution would be much better for this, and every other similar dispute. Dozens of innocents on both sides dead over an action which will achieve nothing other than inflame tensions. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it ever happens though. Yeah but you implied that Starmer is likely to take a hardline pro-Israel approach due to having a Jewish wife otherwise, why mention it? I'm inclined to believe that most Jewish people here are horrified at Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and would rather seek a solution that ends bloodshed for both sides. Spellczech
They are coming across as quite dangerous at their conference...No ideas they are willing to share, and talking incessantly about power and how much they hunger for it... Next election, like the last one is going to be a tough one to choose. Last Westminster election I voted SNP as I could not vote Corbyn or Boris and I actually quite respect Cherry even though I don't favour independence. I have never voted SNP for Scottish Parliament and likely never will as Humza is a total clown...

It doesn’t belong to the Tory party, extremists, racists, xenophobes, Ulster Unionists or Rangers though all have tried to hijack it. Cade
The clean energy drive is not just about the environment. It's about not having to rely on importing fossil fuels to keep the lights on, fossil fuels that are produced and sold by unfriendly or untrustworthy nations. It's about national security. Not being held ransom by oil sheiks or the Russian gas mafia and the wold price fluctuations that come with those suppliers. If we can produce our own energy at home then we're not at the mercy of these people any more. And we should be able to force energy companies to not charge rates based on the international prices of these commodities. So from an economic, national security and an environmental stance, clean renewable energy makes complete sense.

Gundermann
Labour member writing in the Guardian. I admire her loyalty to the party though fail to understand it. Labour members voting for energy renationalisation have just been roundly ignored by a leadership that on the other hand is keen to garner the racist Tory/ Ukip leaning vote in small-town England. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/09/i-will-never-leave-labour-but-my-new-membership-card-makes-me-uneasy Quote All these situations required my urgent intervention, yet I was somehow managing to remain unperturbed. Then I got this email. “Dear Zoe,” it began. “I wanted to reach out and keep you in the loop.” What is this drivel? Did someone put a prompt into ChatGPT saying: “I want to start an email with multiple banal phrases meaning ‘I am sending you an email’. Don’t ask why – I just do.” It was from the general secretary of the Labour party, which I am never leaving, informing me of changes to my membership card. I now have to carry something with a union flag on it that says “putting country first” on the flip side. Frankly, in the era that I joined this party, the late 80s, this would have marked you out pretty unambiguously as a member of the BNP. Am I being a grandma? Do all the other Labour members look at red, white and blue, and hear the language of formless but weirdly pugnacious patriotism and get a lovely, warm, modern vibe? Well, no: we’re all the exact same age. Good luck trying to modernise us, dude, as I for one am never leaving. The new card will also proudly feature clause IV of the party’s constitution: “Through the strength of our common endeavour, we achieve more than we achieve alone.” There’s some graffiti on my way to my nearest Yodel pickup, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”, that’s cleaner and less turgid, but this isn’t a hill I’d die on.
