Russia Invades Ukraine

Ukraine is not being given an immediate entry into the EU this week out of pity.

Too many EU nations are also in NATO and that would only complicate things.

Not happening.

Even the Swiss are adopting the sanctions on Russia with immediate effect.

THE SWISS!!!!

The most neutral country on the planet!

Surprised me too. But there was a *lot* of public feeling expressed in the country that they join in the sanctions.

Apart from that, I wouldn't imagine the EU allowing a new member to join that's currently in the throes of an active war/invasion.

Indeed. But it does further normalise the idea of a Ukraine inside the EU, as well as help to consolidate the approach that this fight is not just Ukraine's fight but "our fight" from the point of view of the member EU countries. I can see why Ukraine asked for it.

Hackers have seriously disrupted Belarus' train network, preventing the easy relocation of large numbers of troops.

Trains have had to fall back on manual points and one train at a time on any given stretch of rail.

Be careful, he had his moments last week too (google 'full tonto') - however given the situation they need our full backing, even if it does feel like we are cheering on Dundee at times...

Sorry, given the situation, she should be removed as soon as possible.

As I say, no great fan of the Tories or their woeful cabinet but I think a guy like Wallace, who has had an extensive military career, is infinitly better to be in a role to deal directly with the Russians at this time.

NATO should move all their troops in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland right up to the Belarus border, it might scare them into recalling their soldiers back from Ukraine.

Indeed so.  There's no way they're going to fast-track Ukraine in, especially when there's an ongoing risk that the government will be overthrown and a Putin puppet one installed.    Borrell came out in the last hour and said it would take years for them or anyone else to become members.

IOC has said it wants all sporting organisations to ban all Russian and Belarussian teams or individuals in international sport.

Hmmm ... wonder if the WTA will comply, with Medvedev just having become world number 1.

Who knows how many will follow but you have to think that all those who participate in the Olympics will feel duty bound to follow suit otherwise they perhaps face being dropped from the summer games.

Headlines I predict without times.

Putin arrested by Russian Parliament

 Putin dies in mysterious accident.

Russia pulls all troops from Ukraine.

Russia claims no government involvement in Ukraine invasion.

For those with a little time on their hands, the Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly of the UN is about to get underway. Basically this was requested by Ukraine at the Security Council so that any country who wants to can give their input on the invasion. Russia tried to block the meeting, naturally, but here we are.

Just anounced by the BBC Radio 5 that they understand that UEFA & FIFA are in discussion to exclude Russia from all international football under any guise. Not before time

Putin diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia and the best thing for him is to be treated in a stately home hospital

There was some talking head on one of the news channels who reckons that excluding Russia from World Cups/Euros and Russian clubs from all Euro competitions will hurt the Russian people more than sanctions. He said "Sanctions might just stiffen their resolve but see how the Russian people feel towards Putin after several years in the sporting wilderness." or words to that affect.

He must be a complete cretin as Russians have been protesting about the war since the start.

Yip.
Best not to think of Russia, or any country, as a single entity with one viewpoint.

Fifa are a disgrace they have dragged their heels over this. While not fair on the sports people Russia should  be banned for all and every world sport.

The irony of one corrupt entity having to make a decision to ban another one.  :wow:

That's the sad thing here. I was working with a few Russians at the time of the 2018 presidential elections.

Between their friends and families they knew a grand total of one person who had voted for Putin.

He won 77% of the vote.

The Russians might 'win', but if they don't agree a settlement their problems haven't started. 40 million people with thousands of Ukrainians travelling back home to fight. Going by the videos they must have a million molotov cocktails already. They face a constant guerrilla compaign.

I heard Catherine Belton interviewed yesterday on R5 Live.   She researched and wrote a book called "Putin's People" and dug into his background.      Here's a link to a transcript of another interview she did at the weekend - well worth a read -

That would be good as long as his replacement is an improvement.

Great irony that Russia is accusing Ukraine of everything Russia itself has been doing for years. Are they that blind?
