I like the whole "live and let live" thing, so if someone wants to identify as a different gender to the one they've been assigned, I'm OK with that. But the trouble - which you've correctly identified - is that tadgered individuals quite often don't behave better, and quite often are a threat to women and are seen by women as a threat. So it becomes one of those tension points where the rights and freedoms of one group of people may clash with the rights and freedoms of another. We've had the GRA in place in Ireland since 2015, and while some commentators on the right here have tried to make an issue of it, the reality is that the legislation has had almost zero negative impact on anyone. However, that legislation is based on people being required to make a legal declaration and certify their change of gender. If Ireland were to go down the road of self-identification of gender without legal certification, I genuinely think we could create a legal and administrative mess.
