maroonlegions
Heart of Midlothian FC to be 'official' football team of new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. This weekend will see the formalising of Heart of Midlothian FC as the “official” football club of HMS Queen Elizabeth, the biggest ship the Royal Navy has ever had in its fleet. The 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier was built at Rosyth with the final stages of system testing expected to be completed in preparation for sea trials in 2016. The club was chosen by HMS Queen Elizabeth for a number of reasons: Hearts’ connection to the British Armed Forces with the formation of McCrae’s Battalion in 1914 to fight in the Great War. The ship’s connection with the City of Edinburgh. The belief that both Hearts and the Royal Navy are currently recovering after challenging times. There will be an official exchange of pennants in the Boardroom before Saturday's Championship clash with Raith Rovers. And as part of the affiliation, Hearts Legends will face a team from HMS Queen Elizabeth in a charity fund-raising match, the date and venue to be confirmed. That was the greatest goal celebration I’ve ever seen, live, in all my 50+ years of following Hearts. It will be talked about for years to come. All the better that it was Celtic fans who had to watch it. Arguably the best and most meaningful result I’ve seen Hearts achieve along with the final in 1998. Was never really a running bit but more a huckle track where countless ne'er do wells would be paraded by L&Bs finest, led bodily around the track, arm bent back and upwards to the applause or abuse of the Hearts support depending on the colours worn before being huckled out onto McLeod Street. More often than not accompanied by the massed ranks chorusing 'Hooli- Hooli- Hooligan' or 'send your casuals over here'. Often acvompanied by the universal sign for being an onanist. Simpler times.
