Really ?   You've not been paying attention over the previous 40 years then.  Plenty of  "better"  candidates for that honour have graced WM and Holyrood over the years.

Impact on public houses ?...and other businesses

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/coronavirus/distancing-advice-in-england-could-change-to-allow-closer-contact/ar-BB14sPHf?li=BBoPWjQ

Britain’s physical distancing advice to stay 2 metres from other people is a “precautionary approach” and could change to allow closer contact, top officials from Public Health England (PHE) have said.

The guidance is out of line with advice in most other countries and with recommendations from the World Health Organisation, which says people should stay just one metre apart.

“We have taken a precautionary approach to say 2 metres apart, full stop,” said Yvonne Doyle, medical director of PHE in evidence to a hearing of the science and technology committee of MPs. “We are still learning about the virus.”

But, she said, the safe distance is still, being discussed and evidence amassed as the end of lockdown restrictions approaches. Doyle said she was aware that a reduction to 1 metre or 1.5 metres could make the difference between businesses re-opening or not.

I heard one of the Sage guys say a couple of weeks ago they just came up with the 2m rule and that there was no real science behind it apart from just lets double it from one it sounds better.I didn't know if this was just a ploy to make folk ease about going back to work or if the genuinely did just decide 2m like that.

Yeah - The  Wetherspoons app allows you to be a lazy barsteward and only leave your seat for the toilet. Have to admit that Picture House is the only one of their pubs that I like but when you can have a 12 hr sesh for about £30 including a pizza, you cannot be too fussy! LOL

The current plan is to review these arrangements after 3 weeks, so it could change on 29th June, if extended you would be on a 2 week lockdown on return, with a £1k fine for breaching it.

I would think that every type of hospitality business will have been working behind the scenes to implement some sort of “let’s make this work” type of plan to put in place as soon as they are given the green light to operate.  Not sure about the smaller sole traders who may not have the cash to do this though.

A simple Table service app with payments ought cost no more than £10k absolute max and that could probably include some offers! If that is the cost between keeping or losing a business...

Wouldn't be surprised if someone is working on a universal one that businesses could use for set monthly rate.

Absolutely - if I were an app developer it's what I'd have been doing last couple of months. Potential goldmine - a Just Eat for pubs

ok cheers, not that I plan on going away in July as holidays aren’t till sept but I’m sure some people will do this and look upon it as another two weeks off work when they come back and nothing employers can do about that

Just confirming on the SG briefing at the moment that the 5 mile travel is relevant to outside exercise for example.  NS understands however that parental visits may involve longer distances and asks people to use their best judgement on doing it or not doing it.

The one thing to consider is where do you pee?  The guidance says you can meet others oitside in an open space but you cannot go into their houses.  So you can do the travel and visits you suggest but the practical point is no public toilets are open and you cannot go inside houses on arrival.

It is a bit of catch 22 I think.  I think that the SG is hoping people still stay local.   I know it is tough because we have not seen our son and his wife at all and want to travel up to Dundee to see him asap.  However where do we pee😃😃. Two 60+ folk like us need facilities😃😃

I think there could be a big market in empty coke bottles and boxes of soft tissues in Phase One😃😃

Problem solved.

In all seriousness everyone needs to have a good look at rules before booking.  Many countries won’t be welcoming tourists from UK and may have similar quarantine to us.

The using the toilet rule is absolute nonsense.  I accept not socialising in the house at this phase but someone popping in to use a toilet for a couple of minutes assuming social distancing, hygiene (I.e don’t touch too much stuff, wipe handles down)  and hand washing is observed cannot possibly be more dangerous than touching items in the shops that could have been handled by a dozen other people.

i haven’t knowingly broken any lockdown rules at all but I am ignoring that one where grandparents of my kids are concerned.

Indeed, people need to be careful as things are not going to be as normal.

There was a Greek tourist guide live on Sky News yesterday, she was at a beach just outside of Athens and she said that there are strict social distancing in force on the beaches and that the Police are limiting the number of people allowed on the beach at any one time, and they have to power to close the beach immediately if social distancing isn't observed.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/coronavirus/distancing-advice-in-england-could-change-to-allow-closer-contact/ar-BB14sPHf?li=BBoPWjQ

That would literally be the difference between pubs being able to operate or not. Apps and folks cleaning tables are all well and good, but if capacity is halved or more with 2m distancing, then it ain't going to make any difference. If anything, the additional costs would make it even more prohibitive. The 2m distancing is key. Reduce it to 1m and they might just have a chance.

Just saw this on Sky news.

After the furore over Calderwood getting emptied it'll be interesting to see how this plays out with the Tory media.

FWIW he's a **** and I hope his next shit is a porcupine

Nothing on BBC as of yet. Surprisingly.
