I'm not in the slightest upset.

You keep pushing the South African hospital numbers, where the picture is nowhere near as bad as you want it to be.

It's looking like the 'virus' is turning into the common cold

Unsure but with omicron being the driving force between their recent surge in infections it would be odd if that rise was the sudden result of a previous strain.

I don't think it would be that odd. We have seen numerous sudden rises in deaths and hospitalisations from previous strains worldwide at different times. It doesn't necessarily mean the cause of that is a new strain so I'd be wary about presuming an increase in a new strain and increase in hospitlaisation must also be related.

Another vaccine creator (astra zenica) says the NEXT pandemic will be deadlier and spending must be commited to vaccines.

Why are these people getting interviewed about this sort of stuff? They are interested in their profit margins and creating mass panic on the public.

Bare in mind this virus did not come from a natural source. Wonder what gain of function monster they are planning on releasing next time?

It was the Vaccine creator not a business person that said it, she was just saying we need to invest in the technology so we are more prepared for any future pandemic. It’s really not that controversial.

And some excellent use of wild speculation as fact in that post too.

Perhaps if people (deliberately?) didn’t misquote then there would be a hell of a lot less misinformation flying about. What was actually said:

Prof Dame Sarah Gilbert(co-creator of AZ vaccine)

"This will not be the last time a virus threatens our lives and our livelihoods. The truth is, the next one could be worse. It could be more contagious, or more lethal, or both.

"We cannot allow a situation where we have gone through all we have gone through, and then find that the enormous economic losses we have sustained mean that there is still no funding for pandemic preparedness," she added.

"The advances we have made, and the knowledge we have gained, must not be lost."

A completely sensible thing for her to say. Everybody was badly prepared this time. Let’s be fully prepared for next time.

The use of could/might seems now obligatory.  It delivers the scare while saying nothing very scientific. When doing my degree they were words I rarely used or heard or read ... But maybe things have changed in 50 years.

Goes back to the early days of the pandemic, mate. Some Asian countries were well ahead of the curve in preparedness. Dedicated agencies to deal with it. We, on the other hand, made a roaring James hunt of it with a combination of cuts and, frankly, corrupt politicians.

Coulds and mights are certainly obligatory when you are talking about preparing for potential future events.

I am not clear how much investment in technology can do about future unknown pandemics. And there is at least a risk that resources are ploughed into this threat when investment in other more basic things such as clean water would save and improve the lives of vastly greater numbers of people. Pandemics cause a few million deaths in rich countries every few decades. Every year many many more die prematurely or live with preventable diseases.

See post above. There are future events and indeed current events worse than  pandemics that do not need coulds and mights to describe. Scientifically, without quantification coulds and mights are pretty meaningless.

We should be investing in both. Vaccine technology could now be used to improve life from many conditions in many countries, so it shouldn’t be ignored and forgotten until the next emergency.

I am astonished you believe we should be investing and giving aid to improve the lot of people in other countries but I totally agree with you.

One of them being austerity and the poverty it causes in this country, which is a massive killer compared to pandemics.

Just because there are current health events doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared for future ones.

My masters thesis was published in a credible scientific journal. Those two words pop up 19 times in 11 pages. I'm not involved in the medical sciences but, these words are completely normal whenever you are discussing any uncertainty in results. I would be surprised if they are not included in the overwhelming majority of published scientific papers.

The BBC (and their likes) know exactly what they're doing with this kind of scaremongering.

Both their main CV19 stories this morning lead with negative views (next virus/South African variant) and both handily place the word could in there somewhere. People, when reading headlines, generally pay little attention to modal verbs, and instead focus on main verbs, adjectives and nouns. It's barely above tabloid level, and it's no accident.

and add " possibly " its all very deliberate.

Yes maybe their "science" is dictated by how much funding they get from whichever source?

Covid breakthrough as Omicron found to have 'less than 1% chance of reinfection' (msn.com)

Just to repeat some good news for a Monday

But other advisers have insisted that we need not panic either way because the variant is not as deadly as a recent swelling of fear might suggest.

Professor Willem Hanekom, Director of the Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa, told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday that, while it is still "early days", data suggest the disease resulting from the Omicron variant "has appeared to be milder" and occurs more in younger, less vulnerable people.

The Government announced on Saturday that it is introducing yet more measures to combat the Omicron variant.

From Tuesday, all travellers arriving in England will have to take a pre-departure Covid test.

But Professor Woolhouse, also appearing on the

Before this, Stuart Keeble, Suffolk's Director of Public Health, insisted that this is no cause for panic and that people should not be cancelling their plans over Christmas.

Here too, the need to resist panic has been

Professor Calum Semple of the Government's advisory group SAGE said on Omicron last week: "This is not a disaster, and the headlines from some of my colleagues saying 'this is horrendous' I think are hugely overstating the situation."

No he wont appear on any of those media platforms Enzo. I was watching a video the other day about how the media have been at the centre of scare mongering. A good example of this was made. If you recall the time we had really low deaths in both England and Scotland ? The media went over board in reporting the covid porn stories from abroad just to keep up in the loop ie. keep us shitting it. In particular the reports from India. .However we hear nothing about India at all now ? The media are ambulance chasers and always have been . Bad .news sells.

Like i said " fake news" . Your interpretation of my postings maybe needs re evaluated.

Just a reminded to those in the back row....

I am NOT against vaccines.

I believe they do cut deaths and serious illness and hospital admissions

However I believe that healthy people do not need  to take the vaccine. That has always been my argument. If they want to its their choice to. So i am pro choice .

Vaccinated people can and do transmit covid. So people rounding on " the unvaccinated " and scapegoating them need to give their heads a wobble.

And as i said around 10 days ago when the new variant was apparently the doomsday variant  I  urged caution and stated lets just wait and see who things pan out.   I was optimistic that it would probably come to nothing. It seems I'm right judging my media reports.

If you really want to post something positive you could say that the numbers of +ve tests in Scotland are still trending downwards, as are the numbers in Hospital, which are at lowest level since August.

That means that there shouldn't need to be any new restrictions place on is in the near future even if Omicron does take off and push all that back up. Which it might not due to the nature of the varian's severity being unknown and the take up of boosters being high.

Things are currently looking good.
