Yes, because the vaccine is not 100% effective.

It's over 90% at stopping serious illness and death

But not death in everyone?

If you’re really unlucky yes. But the vaccine significantly improves your odds 👍

So I have a 99.97% chance if surviving COVID without the vaccine. What percentage survival rate does it take to once you've had the vaccine?

No.

Roughly, say if 100 people were going to die pre vaccine, 92 would now survive and 8 would probably still die.

So if 3 in 10000 would die without the vaccine how many would die in total after they had the vaccine?

That's a different discussion to vaccine efficacy, I'll leave you to it.

Can they still die of malaria after they've had the vaccine?

I’ve no idea on that question but one child in the report had had 3 does of the vaccine and is expected to live where previously the child would have died.

99.97% chance of surviving covid is plucked straight from the social social media warriors who don't understand maths. Repeated enough times that people start taking it as gospel. Lazy troll.

What is it then ? It’s certainly not far off that percentage , depending on age groups ofcourse .

Just for clarity, I was joking. A malaria vaccine is a wonderful thing.

It's around 99.1% according to full fact. That's in relation to developing Covid-19. I'm not sure if maybe the 99.97% thing relates to the survival rate of those catch SARS-CoV-2.

Edit: their article itself is confusing as the social media claim they rebuff is that "the virus has a 99.97% recovery rate" and then they go on to rebuff that by exclusively talking about Covid-19 and don't actually address that claim.

As far as the UK is concerned, 8,000,000 recorded cases have resulted in 137,000 deaths.  That's approx 1 in 59 (or 1.7%) across the board.  Obviously, the older age groups have a higher risk than younger folk, but it's still a scary number.

You also have to factor in all the unrecorded cases (the people who had it and never even knew they had it and those who've tested positive on an LFT but never gone for a PCR or registered their result).

It's not a number I'd lose sleep over tbh even if I caught it...which of course most people haven't.

I'm not playing it down or anything btw. I was just surprised how much of a dog's dinner the full fact page was and trying to give an accurate answer to the question.

Yep . The unrecorded amount of people who have had covid would obviously increase the survival rate percentage . Therefore the 99.7 % probably is not far of the mark

Also remember the symptoms have changed and for those not doing LFT tests they cannot get a PCR test without one of the now much less common original big 3 symptoms.

It's not far off the mark if you take the whole of the UK population of 67.1m and divide it by 137,200 deaths. You get a 1 on 489 chance of dying of Covid, which equates to a 0.2% death rate, or a 99.8% survival rate if everyone in the UK had contracted the virus.

Yes, it's anything but pleasant.  Fwiw, I think we'll be moving away from random testing and mask wearing shortly. Hopefully testing will be just the preserve of the symptomatic.

Actually I’ve been asking for vitamin d testing for a year and finally got tested today . No sure why Surgeries are so reluctant to test people. ? I assume it’s financial / budget issues . I’ll get results back next week

Run of their feet they must be, treating that huge backlog of patients.

Good job I have access to my lab results and my latest HbA1c blood test (diabetes) because the results were back a week ago today and as yet not a single word from my doctor about them or more importantly if I need more/less/different medication, mine's must be run of their feet, don't even have the time to pick up the phone.

That’s not good . My GP said he will call me regarding the blood tests I had today when they come in next week . He’s quite efficient.

Good shout on taking it though, it was high on the list of recommended vitamins pre COVID and featured in numerous prophylactic regimes recommended by the medical profession to combat the effects of COVID.

Cases and the +%rate staying down.  Great.  Edinburgh showing signs of rising after some good progress.  Typical.

thing is Vic when you get down to a lowish level there will always be spikes now and again

Quite annoying.  I'll be keen to see the small increases of the last 2 days be a small blip and reverse again.  At the moment the national incidence and rate seem to have settled down into something akin to a pattern or trend.

Just a hunch but maybe they don't have a plantation of money trees?

Good shout on taking it though, it was high on the list of recommended vitamins pre COVID and featured in numerous prophylactic regimes recommended by the medical profession to combat the effects of COVID.

I need to get my vitamin d levels to a good level due to other health reasons but it’s a bonus if it also helps re covid . It’ll be interesting to me see what my levels are as I have asked repeatedly for this test but was refused . Even bought an online testing kit but  struggled to get any blood out of me !! It was as thick as porridge 😂

I don’t mind buying it at all . I’ve bought loads and not needing A script for it . As for budgets well it’s a false economy really if it isn’t provided to people who maybe can’t afford it . Plenty money for bikes and laptops though !

The UK government have now updated their website to include vaccination figures for everyone over 12.

89.8% have had a 1st dose and 82.5% have had both doses

Yeah, that's kind of irritating me a wee bit as well - we may well be going to settle into a long-term "living with Covid" plateau but I'd prefer that the cases were lower than they are currently for that plateau so that we can keep the hospitalisations and deaths to a minimum.

That strikes me as very good in all honesty.
