I think we all agree that New Zealand should be applauded for how amazingly well they have dealt with Covid. But a whole city going into a full lockdown for one case does seem extreme. And in fact restrictions across the whole country are tightened as a result as well including mass gatherings. Imagine looking forward to game at Tynecastle this weekend and being told you can’t go because there was one case in Aberdeen. I wish we had done better than we had but I wouldn’t want to be living in a country that extreme.

I'm feeling hopeful that the road map will be possible now. Brilliant. Here is an illustration of the daily deaths (averaged over 7 days), by age group, in Scotland over the last year (all mini graphs are to the same scale). The top two age groups have fallen sharply (lockdown + vaccine). I'd hope to see the third group fall sharply over the next month or so when the vaccine starts to come into play for the over 65s. Thats part of the reason the figures are up in certain areas.

Even if the virus circulates, it will be coming up against an ever increasing cohort of vaccinated people, which should help to break transmission chains. Shanks said no
SG should send a few thousand vaccines up to Orkney and Shetland and they could open everything up in a couple of weeks. Total population about 45,

Should be a big increase in numbers after a slight lull so hopefully closer to 50% by the end of March, if not sooner.

Saving as many lives as possible and reducing hospital admissions is the top priority. I would have been happy for key workers to get the nod for any slots that come up through missed appointments over just some random punter (which I assume is what got me an appointment ahead of schedule) but this must be a logistical nightmare compared to just picking someone from the next age group down. Flying through the vaccine programme as quick as possible is the best approach. Edited February 27, 2021 by Ray Gin

Deaths also down by 32% over the same period. Followed your link and the 7 day case rate in my area is 9 in 100.000. Surely going straight into tier two when things open up? Despite the ultra cautious approach and not committing to dates, it should leave it open to be flexible on opening up, if (big if) there is a rapid improvement in the numbers. However I think the mainland will all start in Level 3 for two or three weeks.

Understandable as look at what happened when people started travelling just for a meal etc. Not long to go now.

I’m kinda in the same boat,my work can see me in 5 or 6 different properties every day.Lots of time spent in schools as well make me laugh when they talk about lockdowns and “stay at home”.The trades have been completely forgotten during the alleged lockdowns. Which I think we all knew. Ah, of course. Christmas certainly ****ed things right up. It was probably inevitable to have some impact regardless of what the government said, but telling people it was fine to meet for 5 days, and then to say that it wasn't at the last minute certainly didn't help. You can add the "Kent variant" as contributing to the spike in cases and subsequently deaths. The EU managed to avoid that variant for the most part, at least during the UK spike. It looks like the Kent variant is now taking over Europe. That and their shite vaccine rollout, it's not looking too good for them now
3fingersreid
I try not to watch the news , I found it contributed to my feeling down , but has there been a relaxation of the tiers ? Reason I ask is today whilst working in the garden , I noticed the traffic outside my house was greater than it’s been for some time , more folk on buses too. It was noticeably busier walking along the canal earlier today , groups of people rather than just a couple. My daughter was doing her running around saughton park , she commented on how busy it was . A relaxation or just folk getting out and about ?
