Jim Cowell v Eintracht Frankfurt 1985.jpg

Jim Cowell. Just played in a friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt at Tynecastle in ‘85, which we won 3-1, and in the horrendous 5-2 loss against Liedown, the last game of that season. Think he went on to do quite well with Ayr United.

Used to live round the corner from Ralph, that is definitely him

Christian Crescent.

Ralph used to play in the kick abouts in Portobello Park. He was a Hibs fan in those days also a bit younger than the rest of us. Alex Copley and his brother Tom sometimes joined us on a Sunday.

TBH I preferred when they weren't there as they were streets ahead of the rest as us.

Ralph was a nice wee guy but the other two were a bit aloof they certainly had plenty confidence in their ability.

A brief highlight in an uninspiring season. Always hated that Admiral home shirt, the worst shade of maroon I can remember.

Brand Gardens for me, I was a year younger than his brother Sandy. Amazing who would play in these kickabouts, As well as those you mention,  there was Jimmy Bowie who was at Dunfermline, Davy Steedman who was at Stirling Albion (I think), Drew Brand at Everton, Ricky Houston who I think went to Coventry as well as loads who had trials for various other teams. Wouldn't get that these days.

It’s the one thing I remember from Allan Preston’s time with us. Robbo with the cross. Watch from 11.25 in the video…

Liverpool players.

Ahhh you're right !!    👍  100 year centenary mock-up.   You sold us a dummy there @Maroon Sailor 😃

Molby, Barnes, Grobelaar, Nicol, Wright ..... in back row.  In the front row, I can only recognise Rush (with ball), Fowler (maybe) next to him, Whelan at the end ?

Donald Ford in my opinion. The label over his face doesn't help.

No doubt, it’s Donald

That's who I think as well but with Hegarty and Winchester in the photo I cannot recollect we ever played with 3 strikers.  As a real outside guess I'd suggest Tommy Veitch but maybe I'm clutching at straws

Gibson pen not enough. I think Hearts beat Aberdeen, Celtic and Hibs in a mini run. It didn't last

Nothing did back then, sadly.
We were dire and there didn’t appear to be a plan to get us out of the mess.

Thankfully, Wallace Mercer came along.

Ian Smith and Drew Busby behind the keeper in a 2-1 win I think against OFK Kikinda, a pre-season friendly in July or August’77. Can’t remember the goal scorers, John Gallagher might’ve got 1.

Aug 78 v Middlesbrough

Jim Platt is the goalie, Terry Cooper is the defender. Could be Willie Maddren the other Boro player

Looks like Middlesbrough but according to London Hearts Ian Smith never played in that one.

I was very fortunate to meet this legend a couple of years before he passed . His eyes lit up when I told him he was my late dad's favourite player . A true legend not just at Hearts
