Found this and it says it was in Edinburgh, but I can’t think where. I remember the nightclub  Annabels, but that was in Semple Street

Chalmer's Close. I think that's the Jurys Inn at the bottom.

The photo's from the mid sixties. Annabels changed it's name to Frisco's, as obua said.

I found that here. http://www.edinburghgigarchive.com/page27.htm

No problem getting back home if you lived in Granton in the 50's. Just about every tram pic has one going there !

I remember the rbs branch

on the corner . Were was the BOS one across the road ?

Both branches were on opposite corners of the junction at Mentone gardens and Mayfield Gardens ( a continuation of Minto St). RBS looked like a terraced house, BofS Occupied a traditonal corner site close to the old Newington Station, which the branch was named after. After it closed it became a security company (I think) dealing in alarm systems, safes etc.

I wonder if that was the only one of it's kind in Edinburgh. Never seen them in any other phot

Very popular on railway platforms during Edwardian times. I saw one on a programme a while back thats how I knew what it probably was. They go for funny money if you ever find one.

Very big in France around the same time. Known as pissoirs.

There's still quite a lot dotted about...

If you're interested...

Did they not try a modern equivalent of those in Princes Street ? I vaguely remember some push button contraption up there or I may be getting mixed up with somewhere else in the UK

Looking at the sign on the lamppost in the old picture. I think it is one of the old Please Do Not Spit On The Pavement signs.

I think the location the picture taken from would be Middle or East Arthur Place. The first picture looks like the way it felt on a bad Saturday night, house rows, fights and mayhem.

This part of Chamber Street was called something else but I can't remember .

It may have had the same name as a Leith Street. Maybe Lindsay St.

Any help please?

Bob, would that be close to where you had the fall whilst chasing that couple of suspicious characters and they came back to check if you were alright before taking off again?

I always remember that story.

See where that white vehicle is near the junction. If that was to go straight over would it being going up Craigmillar Castle Road ?

Trying to get my bearings

Yes, where luca ice cream would be (have been) up towards Craigmillar Castle.

Not sure what those small white things are in the top right corner. Don't remember a graveyard there.
