Excellent find.

Look at the state of those windows, all the broken ones.

My Great Grandmother would have moved on from here by 1905, but would have no doubts have seen the exact same as in this photo, because her mother-in-law lived diagonally across the road at Dunbars Close, literally 20 metres to the left from where this photo was taken.

I love these type of photos, because they are a connection to the past, as I'm looking at something my/our ancestors also looked at.

I wonder if Aitcheson House was still known as the 'Cock & Strumpet' when this photo was taken.

David Murray's pub 142 Canongate. Was also called McAndrew's pub but don't know if that was before or after it was Murray's.

That does sound like a challenge, must have been a lot of boozers, plus it’s uphill😀

That reminds me of a Portobello annual pub crawl a few guys I knew did around 1990 for a few years. At the time, there was 28 drinking establishments in portobello, a mixture of pubs, clubs, hotels and even a bar in the Tower Amusements.

They’d do them all on a Saturday once a year. Twice. 56 drinks 😧, didn’t have to be a pint in each though, a short in some/most I’d imagine but still a serious session.

Done that one a few times when I was younger

we used to start at the battery bar

Some memorable Sundays in there in the 70s watching the strippers.  IIRC ,there was another couple of boozers within walking distance doing likewise.

Foresters was a great pub back in the day, was my local when I worked in Portobello back in the 80's. Paul Kelly was a great landlord and good Jambo too! (his wife Gill was also a great host)

Never been in for years but looks more like a 'cafe bar' from the outside these days?

It's alright, a bit over-priced but always seems busy so make what you will of that. The Galleon on the other hand, no idea how it survives, well, I can hazard a guess!

Yes, the "pubic triangle" was an attraction in those days.

Before my time, Seaside, probably. You'll be disappointed to know that the Central (last incarnation was the Beaton Docket) has been closed since before Xmas. Though I did see something on the local FB page about looking for bands, that I tenouously linked to it's reopening. Who knows!

Otherwise it's just the Foresters, Porty Tap, Galleon, (can you count the Social Club down the lane?) The Espy, Portobello Bar (had a bit of a 'fancy' if you can call it that, lol retrofit, The Porty Vault, Smith & Gertrude wee brother to the one in Stiockbridge, and finally the Ormelie.

What's that, nine drinking establishments, a far cry from the 28 odd in the mid to late 80s, as Paddy previously mentioned.

The Hermitage Bar at Morningside used to be Securicor.

Looking for a photograph.

Thanks in advance.

It was built as a hotel

Reception area but the hotel never happened so was then a bank.  They still have the big walk in safe downstairs.

I've never had a pint in there, need to change that at some point.  What's the price of T in there?  And, sorry didn't realise you were still in Porty, thought you had moved away. My reading comprehension needs dusted down.

Oooft, that's a great price. I often see folks advertising comedy nights, northern soul nights, sounds like quite a happening wee place at times.

The same company that built the Caledonian hotel? Not many red stone buildings in Edinburgh. It looks like a mini version

No idea to be honest. It was around the same time though, I think.
